He’s one of the highest-paid chefs in the world, but even Gordon Ramsay wants to teach his children the value of a dollar.
Ramsay was born on November 8, 1966, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He started cooking as a teenager and began his culinary career as a commis chef in the mid-’80s. Fast forward to 1999 when Ramsay found his big break in the British docuseries Boiling Point, which followed the eight intense months leading to the opening of Ramsay’s first (and now flagship) restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, London.
The series, which showcased Ramsay’s highly driven, impatient and hot-tempered personality, made him a star and led him to open dozens more restaurants around the world, as well as star in, host, create, and executive produce several more TV shows, including Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, MasterChef, and MasterChef Junior.

Ramsay is worth $220 million and makes around $60 million per year, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Ramsay also made it on Forbes‘ Celebrity 100 list in 2020, ranking the 100 highest-paid celebrities, on which he was number 19. He was the only chef on the list. According to Forbes, Ramsay’s net worth is mainly credited to his television career, with his shows accounting for more than 75 hours of programming and over $150 million in yearly ad sales for FOX.
As of writing, Ramsay has created, executive-produced, hosted, and starred in close to a dozen shows for FOX, including Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, Next Level Chef, Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars, and Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service.
Forbes also listed Ramsay’s career as a restaurateur as another main source of income, with 35 restaurants around the world, including locations like Las Vegas, New York, Orlando, Miami, Glasgow, London, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Singapore, Bordeaux, and Dubai. Forbes also reported that Lion Capital, a private equity firm specializing in investments, invested $100 milion to build 100 more Gordon Ramsay restaurants over five years.

Ramsay and his wife, Tana, share six kids: Megan, born in 1998; twins Holly and Jack, born in 1999; Tilly, born in 2001; Oscar, born in 2019; and Jesse, born in 2023. In an interview with The Telegraph in 2023, Ramsay revealed that he doesn’t plan to leave any of his fortune to his kids after his death, according to his will, and that the only financial assistance they’ll receive is a 25 percent deposit on their first homes.
“It’s definitely not going to them, and that’s not in a mean way; it’s to not spoil them,” he said. “The only thing I’ve agreed with Tana is they get a 25 per cent deposit on a flat, but not the whole flat.” He continued, “I’ve been super lucky, having that career for the last 15 years in the US. Seriously, it has earned a fortune and I’ve been very lucky, so I respect everything I’ve got.”

Ramsay has hosted and judged MasterChef and its spinoff, MasterChef Junior, since its first seasons. According to Finance Monthly, Ramsay makes $225,000 per episode of MasterChef, which equates to $4,050,000 to $5,625,000 per season, depending on how many episodes there are.
“It’s relatable. You are watching amateur home cooks that are passionate about something they love to do,” Ramsay told Variety in 2015 of the success of MasterChef. “Viewers get to see how they progress when they are given the opportunity to work and learn from some of the best chefs in the business. Viewers want to see how contestants grow from the opportunity. You get attached to the contestants because you want to see them succeed. Often contestants go on to pursue jobs in the culinary industry and people will make special trips to see them in action.” He continued, “Also, MasterChef teaches us about food culture and helps us realize that it’s not just about how to read a recipe. Because of that, it has changed the way we eat, cook and shop.
