In the Nancy Guthrie investigation, the thing that has taken priority is, of course, her well-being. Police and her family have been focused on what law enforcement has learned about the possible suspect, on DNA evidence, and even on messaging aimed at Nancy Guthrie’s possible abductors. No one has really been thinking about going back to their regular lives.

This is especially true for Savannah Guthrie, who has been absent from her job on the Today show since February 2nd. But that doesn’t mean people aren’t wondering if and when she might return. Or if she will even return to the show at all.

Is Savannah Guthrie Coming Back to Today Amid Nancy’s Abduction?

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 27: Savannah Guthrie visits "Fox & Friends" to discuss her new book "Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere" at Fox News Channel Studios on February 27, 2024 in New York City.

Rob Shuter is reporting that though there’s no specific date for her return, there’s no expectation she’ll step away from the show for good. “Her mom sacrificed everything so Savannah could chase this career,” one longtime friend told Shuter. “Walking away now would feel like letting the darkness win.”

And though the discussion isn’t immediate, other sources told Shuter the same. “She loves her family fiercely. And she loves her job,” a source said.  “Those two things can coexist. They have to.”

“They may have taken her mother,” one insider said. “But they will not take her career too.”

But that doesn’t mean Guthrie is set to return anytime soon. And when she does, it will likely not be easy. “It’s going to be emotional. It’s going to be hard,” another source admits. “But she will be back. In her mom’s honor.”

However, other reports indicate she won’t be coming back. Page Six Multiple TV veterans told Status News that it’s doubtful she’ll be back. “There’s no way Savannah’s coming back,” one source told the outlet. “I can’t imagine she would even want to.”

But reports also indicate NBC will be waiting for her if she decides she does. “If you could pick one person across the span of morning TV that a show would not want to lose, it would be Savannah,” a source said.

“Savannah was always the glue on that show, and without that, this whole paradigm of our morning anchor team as a family, that connective tissue has just been ripped out,” the source added.

For now, Savannah Guthrie’s former co-anchor, Hoda Kotb, has filled in for Guthrie. She exited the show in January 2025 after 26 years.

Page Six had previously reported that Guthrie would be off the show for the “foreseeable future” and would continue to focus on the investigation into her mom’s kidnapping. “The entire show and network is rallying together in support of our beloved colleague and friend as we navigate this unimaginable time,” an NBC source told Page Six.

“Everyone at ‘Today’ is taking this day by day, and of course giving Savannah the grace, time, and support she needs,” one source also told the outlet.

Guthrie has mostly been seen in social media messages that she has been sending to her mother and to the kidnappers. She has appeared on her own and alongside her siblings, pleading with the kidnappers and asking the general public to please reach out to the police if they have any information.

And her friends are worried about her. “She looks devastated. She looks like she’s struggling,” one source told the outlet. “She can’t be doing well.”

“Anyone who knows her is obviously so worried about her.”
