Bill Gates is finally coming clean. The Microsoft founder confessed to cheating on his ex-wife, Melinda French, with two Russian women in a town hall for his nonprofit organization, Gates Foundation, while addressing speculation over his past relationship with late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

“I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit,” Gates said, according to a recording reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. A spokesperson for Gates confirmed to People in a statement the town hall was a scheduled meeting where Gates Foundation employees could submit questions, including the billionaire’s past ties with Epstein. “This was a scheduled townhall with employees, which Bill does twice a year. In the conversation, Bill answered questions submitted by foundation staff on a range of issues, including the release of the Epstein files, the foundation’s work in AI, and the future of global health,” the statement read. “In the townhall, Bill spoke candidly, addressing several questions in detail, and took responsibility for his actions.”

In documents released by the U.S. Justice Department, Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 after being accused of human trafficking, drafted emails in which he accused Gates of of contracting a sexually transmitted infection from “Russian girl,” which he allegedly wanted to hide from French.

Gates, who had previously called the claims “absolutely absurd and completely false,” later confirmed that he did have affairs with “Russian bridge player who met me at bridge events and one with a Russian nuclear physicist who I met through business activities.” The “bridge player” was identified by The Wall Street Journal in 2023 as a woman named Mila Antonova, who met Gates around 2010 when she was in her 20s, per the publication.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Gates confirmed to staff that “he never spent any time with victims, the women around [Epstein].” He also called it a “huge mistake to spend time with Epstein” after first meeting the sex offender in 2011. “I apologize to other people who are drawn into this because of the mistake that I made,” he said.

He continued, “Knowing what I know now makes it, you know, a hundred times worse in terms of not only his crimes in the past, but now it’s clear there was ongoing bad behavior.”

Gates and French divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage. They share three children: Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe.
