The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby’s son, Robert Cosby Jr., has died. He was 23 years old.

Mary shared Robert Jr. with his father, Robert Cosby Sr. They welcomed their son in 2002 after trying to start a family for four years. Robert made his Bravo debut along with Mary in Season 1 of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City and continued to appear on the series until Season 6, which concluded just before his death. “Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord. Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace. We are grateful for your prayers and trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of sorrow,” Mary told TMZ in a statement after his death.

What was Mary Cosby’s son’s cause of death?

While Robert Jr.’s cause of death is unclear at this time, Salt Lake City police confirmed that they responded to a possible overdose, which turned into a death investigation upon arrival.

Police told TMZ that they responded on Monday, February 23, to a call for a “full arrest/medical emergency” for a 23-year-old male, and that firefighters and paramedics were dispatched. Robert Jr.’s death comes months after his wife, Alexiana Smokoff, filed for divorce.

RHOSLC has followed Robert Jr.’s relationship with drugs throughout his time on the Bravo show. “I can help you,” Mary pleaed with Robert Jr. in an emotional episode of RHOSLC in 2024. “I can try to help you, but you have to help yourself, because I’m not gonna support it. I’m not. You know I’m not. Do you accept it’s a problem, that you’re having a problem?”

The scene continued with Mary telling Robert, “You will die.” She continued, “You’re blessed. You wake up every morning, every day is a new day, a blessed day to waste, to get high.”

Robert Jr. then responded, “I wanted to die at the time,” to which Mary responded, “You know how that would kill me?” Robert replied, “I felt like a stain — I just felt like this world wasn’t for me. You’re the only reason I didn’t kill myself.”

Mary then cried as she told Robert Jr. how happy she’s made him. “You have to know I love you more than anything. More than anything in this world. I think I love you more than dad, like, don’t ever tell dad I said that, but you’re my friend, you’re my son, you’re my gift,” she said. “God gave you to me. You’re the only thing that ever made me happy. Before I had you, I was never happy. You came and you were so real. It was everything I hoped for in a person.”

She continued, “Please recognize it, own it and change it. Because you can.”

In a confessional interview, Mary confessed that she felt like she “let” her son “down” as a mother. “I just feel very disappointed with myself,” Mary said. “I feel like I let him down somewhere. I’m very aware, and I do know that Robert did smoke weed. I do know he would eat edibles, but yet I just trusted him in my mind, thinking that’s where he would stop. And I was clearly wrong. I mean, clearly wrong. I missed the mark.”
