People love to play armchair detective. This is true when they’re watching fiction and when they’re watching the news. And the case of the kidnapping of Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy, has been one of the things the collective internet has fixated on for the last month or so. Particularly because it all makes very little sense. No one really knows what happened, including the police.

Which means the internet has gone from wild conspiracy theory to wild conspiracy theory. First, it was Savannah Guthrie’s brother-in-law, Tommasso Cioni, who the internet was sure was involved. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department then confirmed that they had ruled out “all siblings and spouses” as suspects, so then people moved on.

And they moved on to one specific person. Dominic Evans, who plays in a band with Tommaso Cioni, the husband of Savannah Guthrie’s sister, Annie Guthrie. According to the internet, he matches the description released of the suspect seen in surveillance video and photos.

The elementary school teacher spoke out about the accusations. “I feel like someone’s taken my name,” Evans told The New York Times in an article published Feb. 25. “I don’t know—monetary, clickbait, to be relevant, entertainment—but there are innocent people that get hurt,” he said about why the speculation had zeroed in on him.

Conspiracy theorists even showed up at Evans’ house. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos also spoke to the Times about the situation. “He’s going through hell, and it is horrible,” he said. “And I don’t know what to tell him except he probably should be speaking with some attorneys and sue some of these people for libel.”

Nanos didn’t publicly rule out any subjects outside of the Guthrie family, but did say, “I wish I could jump out and defend every single one of them that’s been falsely accused.”

There have still been no concrete leads on Nancy Guthrie. Savannah and her siblings recently announced a $1 million reward for the return of their mom, dead or alive.

“If you’ve been waiting and you haven’t been sure, let this be your sign to please come forward,” Savannah said in a Feb. 24 Instagram video. “Tell what you know, and help us bring our beloved mom home, so that we can either celebrate a glorious, miraculous homecoming, or celebrate the beautiful, brave and courageous and noble life that she has lived.”

Nancy Guthrie and her late husband Charles shared three kids: Savannah, Annie, and Camron. She reportedly went missing sometime between the night of January 31 and the morning of February 1, when she was reported missing after her family checked on her because she did not show up for church. Multiple ransom notes have been received, but no proof of life, and though police have recovered DNA evidence and released photos and surveillance video, no suspect has been named.

Savannah Guthrie has been absent from the Today show since Feb 2, and there’s no set date for her return.
