Mackenzie Scott and Jeff Bezos

When Jeff Bezos divorced Mackenzie Scott, the two didn’t just go their separate ways in a personal sense, but they went their separate ways in a professional sense, too. Bezos continued to focus on his companies and on making more money, while Scott has dedicated her life to philanthropy, with a stated goal of giving away most of the money she got in her divorce settlement to charity during her lifetime.

And Scott has certainly put her money where her mouth is. She donated $7.2 billion in just 2025 alone, which brings her total to a staggering $26 billion in the last five years. And that’s not just more than Bezos gave to charity last year, it’s in fact more than Bezos, the world’s fourth-richest man, has given to charity across his entire life.

Forbes estimates that Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez, have given around $4.7 billion to charity over their lifetimes. It sounds like a lot, but to put it in perspective, that’s about one-fifth of what Scott has donated since her 2019 divorce from Bezos. At the time, Scott received about 4% of Amazon stock, which was worth somewhere around $36 billion and $38 billion at the time.

The rising Amazon stock has meant that Scott’s net worth has continued to increase, even as she gives away so much of her money. In fact, she is worth roughly $39 billion right now, despite having given so much to charity. Her ex-husband, Bezos, still owns 9% of the company he founded in 1994 and has a reported net worth of $230.2 billion.

In December of last year, Scott published an essay on her website discussing her 2025 charitable contributions. “This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year.”

Scott has also donated large amounts of money to historically Black colleges and universities. “There are many ways to influence how we move through the world, and where we land,” she wrote.

She donated $2.6 billion in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023.

All of this comes after reports about Bezos and Sánchez having two very different levels of energy. “Lauren’s energy is non-stop,” a source told Rob Shuter, who described the two during the holidays. “She was jumping, dancing, laughing — and Jeff was hanging on for dear life. He looked wiped.”

“He’s happy, but he’s clearly worn out trying to match her,” another source said.

The couple will be the primary donors for the 2026 Met Gala, which will be “Costume Art” themed. “I think Lauren is going to be a wonderful asset to the museum and to the event,” Anna Wintour told CNN. “[I’m] very grateful for her incredible generosity, and she’s a great lover of costume and obviously of fashion, so we’re thrilled she’s part of the night.”

Very different paths for Scott and her ex-husband, indeed.
