A possible motive for Nancy Guthrie’s abduction has been identified by a forensic expert.

Forensic analyst Scott Morgan told NewsNation in an interview published on March 4 that he believes Nancy was a “valuable target” for criminals not only because she’s the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, but also because her age makes her a prime victim for burglars and home invaders. “‘I’ve had people that have taken advantage of the elderly because they knew that they had money, and they bum rush them into their house and they snatch them out of there, or they do terrible things like murder inside of the house,” he said. “She is a much more valuable target to them if they had foreknowledge of whose mother she was … and so if they think that they can get anything out of her, I think that that comes to local knowledge.”

He continued, “(Perhaps a) grandson that might be in the neighborhood that has some knowledge that’s been talking about this for a protracted period of time. I wonder if it’s gang-related. I wonder what they’re pressing relative to the gang associations in Pima County, because this smacks of this, relative to targeting her.”

Nancy, 84, went missing in the middle of the night from her home in the Catalina Foothills of Arizona on February 1. While she’s yet to be found, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told NBC News in a post on March 2 that officials are “definitely closer” to finding the suspect (or suspects), with the sheriff telling reporters that he was looking into Ring camera footage of a car seen speeding around two-and-a-half miles from Nancy’s home at 2 a.m. the night she disappeared.

The update on the Nancy Guthrie case also comes after a source told Radar Online in a report published on February 25 that Savannah, who has worked on Today since 2011, is “questioning” whether her fame put her “family’s safety” at risk. “Savannah is devastated – and fearing the worst. She’s trying to be strong, but this has shattered her,” the insider said. “She’s questioning everything – her career, her public life and whether staying in the spotlight is worth the risk to her family’s safety.” The source added, “Her only focus is protecting her family. Returning to Today is absolutely the last thing on her mind.”

The insider continued, “No matter how this ends, Savannah has been completely shaken. Having her mother wrenched away from her like this has thrown her for a loop in a way friends have never seen before.”

Savannah joined Today in 2011 as a substitute for Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry. She became a co-host of the 9 a.m. hour that same year before NBC announced that she would be joining Matt Laeur as a co-anchor in 2012. Throughout Savannah’s time on the morning show, Nancy had been featured on Today several times, including a “Homecoming” segment in November 2025, highlighting Nancy’s life in Tucson, Arizona, and Savannah’s childhood.
