Britney Spears‘ team is speaking out after she was arrested for a DUI.

Spears was arrested in Ventura County, California, on Wednesday, March 4, at 9:28 p.m. local time by the California Highway Patrol on a charge for allegedly driving under the influence. She was booked into a local jail at 3:02 a.m. and was released around 6 a.m., according to jail records obtained by TMZ, which was the first to report on her arrest. She’s set to make a court appearance at Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for Spears told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement after her arrest. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

Spears shares sons Sean Preston and Jayden James with ex-husband Kevin Federline. A source told Us Weekly at the time of her arrest that Spears’ family hopes her DUI was a “wake-up call” for things to change. “I hope this is a wake-up call for her,” the insider said.

Spears was famously freed from her court-directed conservatorship in 2021, which removed her father, Jamie Spears, from his role as the conservator over her estate and medical decisions. Spears was put under the conservatorship in 2008 after she was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation.

In his recent memoir, You Thought You Knew , Federline, who divorced Spears in 2007 after three years of marriage, revealed that he worried for his ex-wife’s “survival.” “The truth is, this situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible,” he wrote. “It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the eleventh hour. Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”
