If you haven’t been following the Jim Carrey news, then you’ve been missing out. It’s been an absolute rollercoaster. It all started when Carrey made an appearance at the 51st César Film Awards on February 26. So far, on par for the course. It’s awards season, and actors are present at many different red carpets. Except when the 64-year-old actor appeared at the Olympia venue in Paris to accept the Honorary César Award, fans were convinced the person they were seeing wasn’t him.

According to fans, Carrey looked different, to the point that they started to speculate that it might not be him at all. Some claimed he’d been cloned. Some claimed someone else was pretending to be him. Things got even more confusing when make-up artist Alexis Stone posted a picture of a prosthetic on Instagram alongside photos of Carrey at the awards show.

“Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” the caption read. Confusing much? And even celebrities were confused, with actress Megan Fox commenting: “I can’t handle any more stress right now, I need to know if this is real.” Plus, the comments got wild. “We demand proof of life from Jim Carrey !!!!” one commenter wrote. Others didn’t even believe it was him. “Are you telling me that the Cesar Awards gave Jim Carrey a Honorífic Award, and The person who went to receive it was a some random Guy, no offense, that’s bull… That’s disrespectful and i Don’t believe it as the truth…” another person wrote.

But Grégory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, released a statement to Variety, putting conspiracy theories to rest. “Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” he said. “From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation.”

Caulier also said Carrey’s appearance followed “eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions”, and that he worked on his speech, which he delivered in French, “for months.”

“He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again,” Caulier added. “For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

The actor said in his speech, “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire. How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me,” and also had time to joke about his French. “How was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired,” he said with a laugh.

Jim Carrey’s rep confirmed to TMZ that the actor did attend the awards ceremony. “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award,” the rep said. Carrey hasn’t confirmed or denied whether he got plastic surgery.
