Ryan Murphy’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette has reignited people’s interest in the relationship between the couple. And even though it’s fair to say we can take most of what we see in the show with a grain of salt, it’s still made people curious about the real story behind the romance.

One of the questions that’s been asked the most is about finances, particularly due to the depiction of the couple’s volatile relationship on the show. Did the two have a prenup before their wedding? What were the terms? Here’s everything we know about the subject.

Did JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette Have a Prenup Before Their Wedding?

After the wedding, it was reported that John F. Kennedy Jr. had indeed signed a prenuptial agreement with Carolyn Bessette, and the prenup reportedly had a sliding scale of payments. Under the terms of the prenup, Bessette would get $1 million if the two divorced within three years.

But the longer the marriage went on, the more Bessette stood to gain. If the two divorced after three to 10 years of marriage, she would receive $2 million. If they divorced after 10 years, the figure would increase to $3 million. The agreement was reportedly drafted just 12 days before the two married in a secret ceremony in 1996.

In July 1999, the small plane JKF Jr. was piloting crashed into the ocean, with JFK Jr., Carolyn, and her sister Lauren all dying in the crash.

Ryan Murphy’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette has come under criticism for its depiction of the relationship. “Well, if you want to know someone who’s never met anyone in my family, knows nothing about us, talk to Ryan Murphy. I would just want people who do watch the show to watch it with one letter in mind, and that’s a capital F for fiction,” Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew, told CBS News.

Schlossberg, who is the son of Caroline Kennedy, JFK Jr.’s sister, also said that Murphy is “making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else’s life,” and he should take the money and donate it to “some of the causes that John championed throughout his life.”

He’s not the only one displeased with the show. Actress Daryl Hannah, who had a high-profile relationship with JFK Jr. before his marriage, hit back hard against the show and her portrayal.  “I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties,” she wrote for The New York Times.

“I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis’ death to a dog’s. It’s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct – and they are false.”

The nine-episode limited series is set to air its last episode on March 26.
