When the former prince Andrew was arrested, the British royal family immediately took steps to distance themselves from him. In fact, the damage control had started before, when Andrew was stripped of his titles and ordered to vacate Royal Lodge. But that hasn’t stopped the questions. The more of Andrew’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is revealed, the more people wonder about what role the royals took in protecting Andrew all these years.

After all, his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, demoted him as a working royal but didn’t do much else and provided him with the money to pay a settlement to Virginia Giuffre. And his brother, King Charles, and even his nephew, Prince William, were happy to be seen with him until just recently. Andrew was even invited to Christmas at Sandringham until his presence became too much of a scandal.

Royal expert Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, told Woman’s Day that the palace is trying to “get away with putting a lid” on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s scandals.

“The fact that the Palace may have been complicit in perverting the course of justice seems to be a huge story,” Lownie claimed. And he made it clear there should be consequences. ”I think the King should step down, I think he is compromised, but I don’t think he will,” he said.

Charles has remained in his position and is doing a great deal of royal duties even in the midst of his cancer diagnosis, which to Lownie means he won’t “give it up without a huge fuss,” particularly considering he “waited a long time for this job.” But Lownie isn’t the only one who thinks Charles should step down, amidst suggestions that the institution protected Andrew for years.

Former royal butler Paul Burrell was singing the same tune when Andrew was first arrested. “Inside those palace walls, they need to show the public that they care, they need to show the public that they are dealing with this. No more fluffing around and no more excuses. I really think it’s time for decisive action with our monarchy, otherwise we’ll lose it,” he said on Piers Morgan’s show, Uncensored.

If all eyes are on Charles, it’s because, according to reports, Prince William wanted to go “much further, much earlier” regarding Andrew, but was overruled. That still doesn’t completely let William off the hook; he was in close contact with Andrew until recently and was even photographed with him just last year. However, William is reported as being the “real architect” of Andrew’s downfall, per Rob Shuter’s Substack, Naughty But Nice.

“William made it clear this couldn’t drag on any longer,” a palace insider told the columnist. “He told his father that if Andrew didn’t go quietly, the family’s image would never recover.”

Either way, this Andrew scandal has been another black mark on the monarchy as a whole. Can the institution recover? It might just depend on what else comes out about Andrew and who knew about it and protected him.
