Talk show legend Conan O’Brien and Taylor Tomlinson’s friendship goes way back, having appeared on his show and later on his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend.
In 2019, they hit the road together on a comedy tour through the US. One day on the tour bus, Tomlinson told O’Brien a story about being “obsessed” with American Girl dolls but sad she never got one growing up. In a recorded segment, she explained: “My parents wanted me to have a work ethic so they would never buy me the doll because they were ridiculously expensive, and they wanted me to be a good person rather than happy. So never received one of these dolls.”

Being the generous guy that he is, O’Brien bought one for her, much to her delight. Well, actually, he bought two, Samantha and Kit, but explained she “could only choose one” and “the other one will be destroyed”, he joked, “I’m going to feed it into one of those mulching machines.” Tomlinson chose Samantha, and, rather than destroy Kit like he quipped he would, O’Brien gave Kit to comedian Flula Borg.
Speaking with StyleCaster years later for our Take Action issue with Tomlinson, O’Brien gave us an update on how Samantha is doing. “I haven’t seen that American Girl doll in four years and I do worry about that child,” O’Brien told us. “I have no doubt that Taylor could be an incredible mother, but I honestly never once saw her feed that kid or even comb her hair. Often, instead of putting her quietly to bed, she’d hurl that little angel into a corner of the tour bus and take off for the nearest club. I’ve called child services several times, but they keep telling me, ‘Sir—it’s a plastic doll!’”
In all seriousness, though, he had nothing but good things to say about Tomlinson. “Taylor’s secret weapons are her authenticity and her bravery,” O’Brien said. “She’s not afraid to share things openly from her childhood or her adult life. She walks up to that third rail and then masterfully veers into the absurd. The point is made and the comedy is not only intact, but it shines all the brighter.”
