Lily Gladstone’s Oscars Look Featured So Many Secret Nods to Indigenous Culture

At first glance, Oscar nominated star Lily Gladstone’s Oscars 2024 red carpet look might appear as just another glamorous gown in a sea of glamorous gowns, but when you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that her outfit has so many hidden details that feature a nod to her Indigenous culture.

If you’re not already familiar, Gladstone is nominated tonight for Best Actress for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Her stunning performance not only left audiences captivated, but Gladstone has since used her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and she has officially made history as the first Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a lead role.

Before their post was taken down due to Instagram copyright ~drama~ Check the Tag revealed that Gladstone’s look is custom Gucci with Joe Big Mountain custom quillwork, a type of embellishment traditionally practiced by the Native American people in North America that uses the quills from porcupines to create unique designs. Joe Big Mountain is a quillwork artist from the Mohawk, Cree & Comanche Nations, and Gladstone’s gown featured these gorgeous designs, shining a light on Indigenous artists.

The result is an absolutely stunning display on the carpet.

In addition to the quillwork, Gladstone’s hair stylist added a secret Indigenous nod for good luck. Celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena used Better Not Younger and Indigenous brand Sister Sky products to style Gladstone’s gorgeous flowing locks for the night. He also added in a few Great Lengths tape-in extensions to complete the look.

According to a press release, Mena then added something else to the actress’ locks. “I added a tiny braid underneath her hair as a nod to the Indigenous people and for luck,” he said. “You won’t be able to see it, but it’s there. She had braids when she won the Golden Globes and the SAG, so a little bit of superstition and I wanted to make sure that was in there for luck.”
