Love Island‘s Tommy Fury Revealed the Real Reason He Broke Up With Molly-Mae

It was the bombshell no Love Island fan expected. After half a decade together, one of Love Island UK’s most fan-favorite couples, Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury, have broken up. But the reason for their split could be even crazier than any drama viewers saw on Love Island UK.

Molly-Mae and Tommy met on Season 5 of Love Island UK in 2019, where they were the runners-up. Four years later, they welcomed their first and only child together, a daughter named Bambi, in 2023. Less than a year later, Molly-Mae and Tommy got engaged after he proposed to her on a fake press trip. “23/07/23💍😭,” Molly-Mae captioned an Instagram video of the proposal. 

After a baby, an engagement, and five years together, Molly-Mae and Tommy were one of Love Island UK’s longest-standing couples. That all changed, however, in August 2024 when the couple announced that they had split less than a month after the anniversary of their engagement. 

Why did Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury break up from Love Island UK? 

Molly-Mae announced she and Tommy split in an Instagram Story post on August 14, 2024, in which she suggested that something unexpected happened in their relationship to cause their breakup. 

“Never in a million years did I think I’d ever have to write this. After five years of being together I never imagined our story would end, especially not this way,” she wrote.” I am extremely upset to announce that mine and Tommy’s relationship has come to an end.”

She continued, “I will forever be grateful for the most important thing to me now and always, my beautiful daughter. Without us, there would be no her, she will always be my priority.”

Molly-Mae concluded her post by thanking Love Island UK fans for their support throughout her and Tommy’s five-year relationship. “I want to thank you all for the love you have shown us over the last five years. You have all been a part of our journey and I feel it’s right to share this with you all. Whilst I attempt to navigate the coming days and weeks please kindly respect my privacy over this difficult time, I’ll be back when it feels right.”

Tommy, for his part, also confirmed the split in his own Instagram Story post in which he claimed that the breakup was a mutual decision between them. “I am heartbroken to share that Molly & I have decided to end our relationship,” he wrote. “The past 5 years have led to us having our beautiful baby girl, Bambi, & I will be forever grateful to Molly for making me a dad. Bambi is our priority. Please respect our privacy, our families’ privacy, as we navigate our way through this difficult time.” (At the time of writing, both Molly-Mae and Tommy still follow each other on Instagram.)

The announcement came less than a month after Molly-Mae shared an Instagram video of her and Tommy’s engagement in 2023. “One year ago today I was tricked into going on a fake brand trip on which the love of my life would ask me to marry him🤍,” she captioned a video of Tommy proposing to her as she held Bambi.

So why did Molly-Mae and Tommy break up? While neither Molly-Mae nor Tommy have confirmed the reason for their split, at the time of writing, fans speculate that Tommy’s partying and possible infidelity could have to do with their split. 

In a YouTube video in 2023, Molly-Mae revealed that she started to fear that Tommy was cheating on her after he became protective of his phone. “My mind did somersaults, I thought, ‘Why is he shady about his phone who is he talking to?” she said. “My mind went to the worst option. I was staring out the window like I was in a sad movie.”

Molly previously confirmed in her 2022 memoir, Becoming Molly-Mae: Finding Happiness in an Online/Offline World, that her and Tommy’s main relationship issues had to do with his alcohol habits. “The only major arguments Tommy and I have had have been to do with him drinking,” she wrote. “Which he only does a few times a year. He won’t even do anything wrong; I’ll just lose it at him because I hate it. I do have this anxiety around alcohol and the things I’ve seen it do to the people around me – I personally don’t think that alcohol adds anything good to a situation.” 

She continued, “In my experience, yes, it might temporarily make you have a better night out, but the next day you’re suffering the repercussions when you have a terrible hangover. Maybe I’ve just never had a good experience with it.”

Molly-Mae and Tommy’s split came months after Tommy was seen partying with another woman, who was seen touching his face, at a club in Dubai in August 2023 while Molly-Mae was at home taking care of Bambi. Following the videos, Molly-Mae was seen without her engagement, though she later confirmed in a YouTube video in December 2023 that she and Tommy were still together. 

“There’s been a lot of questions about Tommy and I getting married, so many questions,” she said. “Everyone’s asking about weddings, they’re also asking about our relationship and how things are. I get it, just general questions that people want to know. When I put that Q and A box up I should have known what everyone’s going to be asking questions about.”

She continued, “I’m sure people would probably expect me to be like, “Yeah, I hate it!” but honestly, what do I expect? My life is in the public eye. This is unfortunately what you kind of sign up for with this job. I really don’t care what is said about me, Tommy, my relationship, I don’t care what’s said about me.”

Still, despite Molly-Mae’s positive outlook on her and Tommy’s relationship, a source told The Sun at the time of Tommy’s videos that Molly-Mae viewed the incident as an “embarrassment” to her. “Molly has made no secret of the fact she doesn’t like it when Tommy parties too hard,” the insider said. “This weekend has ended up being a real embarrassment to her. She was mortified when she kept getting tagged in videos while she was just trying to enjoy a festive weekend with Bambi. She has told Tommy it really has to stop now he’s a dad and has told him to ditch some of his pals, who she thinks are a bad influence.”

The insider continued, “There are certain people he always goes too far with and it would be easier for everyone if they were out of his life.”

On January 15, 2025, Tommy Fury cleared up the cheating rumors, and revealed that alcoholism was the reason behind the breakup. “All I’ve been seeing for the past six months is ‘Cheater!’, ‘He slept with me!’, ‘He slept with this girl, he slept with that girl!’ Complete and utter bollocks,” he told Men’s Health. We broke up because I had a problem with alcohol and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore. It kills me to say it, but I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink.”

He continued, “Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing. You need to get a grip of it. If you’re in the same spot as me, where you just think that it’s going to cure all your problems, it doesn’t. You wake up even worse and you want to drink more to try and feel happy again. That’s the cycle of it.”
