Charlie Sheen revealed that he is HIV positive in a live interview Tuesday morning on the Today show.
“I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV positive,” Sheen told Matt Lauer. Sheen said he knew about his diagnosis for four years.
“It started with what I thought was a series of cluster headaches, sweating the bed. I thought I had a brain tumor. I thought it was over. … It’s a hard three letters to absorb. It’s a turning point in one’s life,” the actor said.
Last week, The Sun published an explosive story claiming that Hollywood was “gripped with fear” after it was revealed that a womanizing A-list actor was infected with the disease, causing rampant speculation—both on other sites and on social media—about who it could be.
Sheen’s name was at the top of the list, given the troubled actor’s admitted drug use and solicitation of prostitutes.
According to The Sun, the actor in question had known about his diagnosis “for years” and was urged to come forward. A source said: “Lots of people close to him have suggested he face this situation head-on and own it publicly.”
As the reports hit a fever pitch, NBC News announced Monday that Sheen would make a “revealing personal announcement” in a sit-down on Tuesday with Lauer, causing a flurry of headlines anticipating the news.
