Brie Larson Is Engaged to Phantom Planet Frontman Alex Greenwald

The 'Room' actress bopped around on 'SNL' over the weekend rocking her new ring.
Brie Larson and Alex Greenwald Are Engaged

After Brie Larson won a superfecta of best-actress awards—Oscars, Golden Globes, SAGs, BAFTAs, and Independent Spirits—for her performance in “Room,” she got engaged to her musician boyfriend of a few years, Alex Greenwald, showing up celebrities and laypeople alike in a major way and leaving the rest of us in the dust. (Well, except for Blac Chyna—as far as we know, Larson isn’t pregnant and she doesn’t have a purple Lambo, but she does have those five awards, so—let’s just call them neck and neck.)

The cat first came out of the bag when Larson hosted “Saturday Night Live” May 7 sporting her sparkler from the Phantom Planet frontman (Larson’s rep confirmed the engagement to People today). That’s one way to announce one’s engagement to the world. “He’s the other half of the equation—how can you explain support?” Larson told “Entertainment Tonight” of Greenwald at the SAGs. “I mean, it goes beyond anything. He’s just my person, he’s my best friend.”

Larson and Greenwald appeared on red carpets from here to kingdom come through last year’s awards season, and Larson shouted him out in her thank-you speeches, so this isn’t exactly a shock. Fun fact: Phantom Planet is the proud performer of “California,” a.k.a. the theme song for “The O.C.” Also, Jason Schwartzman used to be the band’s drummer.

Larson, the first woman ever to take to Instagram to avow that Leonardo DiCaprio was, in fact, not touching her butt, leapt to the forefront of the media circus with her awards-season near-grand slam last year (she missed out on the Critics’ Choice Award, which went to Julianne Moore for “Still Alice”). Maybe Greenwald is the jealous type. Why else would someone want to deny a DiCaprio butt-grab? Oh, maybe because he’s kind of skeevy.

Anyway, congrats to the happy couple!
