It’s True: Demi Lovato Quits Twitter and Instagram

Announcing you’re quitting social media is not unlike telling someone you’ll no longer talk to them. It undermines your point and gives the distinct impression that you are still engaged with the very thing you’re said to be done with. But still, it’s become standard social-media etiquette, as if leaving without telling anyone were some kind of digital Irish exit. So it’s not surprising that when Demi Lovato decided to break it off with Twitter and Instagram, she shouted it in a series of tweets.

Though the singer didn’t say why she was quitting, she followed the all-too-familiar format of the Twitter quit in her exit. First, there’s the announcement.

Then there’s the “but wait” tweet. This time it was that she could not give up Snapchat.

That’s followed by existential questioning about the validity of social media.

And then, of course, there’s a tweet about something tangentially related, but it seems more like someone who wants to keep tweeting.

Still, we have to hand to Demi. She’s no stranger to the full-on rant, so we’d have to say this showed restraint. And she left Insta without a word. Her last post was some solid self-promotion for her Devonne skin-care line. But who knows what today will bring.
