After a tumultuous period through the past couple of years, the gaming industry is back on track and 2023 has been an amazing year for releases. Walmart’s video game sale features some of the top titles from AAA developers to more indie ones, so look no further because this is a comprehensive rundown of all the things gamers will be putting on their holiday wish lists this year.
From the early days of pixelated graphics and simple gameplay, gaming has evolved into highly sophisticated and graphically impressive experiences. The advancements in hardware and graphics technology have led to more immersive and realistic gaming environments. Thanks to pioneers like Half-Life and Metal Gear Solid, video games have also become more sophisticated in storytelling, often offering narratives on par with movies and literature. Cinematic cutscenes, voice acting, and complex storylines have become a fundamental part of many games and budgets for AAA games often match that of Hollywood blockbusters—taking much more time and more resources to complete.
Xbox CEO Phil Spencer was asked what he thought about the video-game-to-TV series The Last of Us, which as a game was a Sony PlayStation exclusive. “As an industry, where maybe — and everybody won’t agree with me — but sometimes I think we’ve looked at other media in an envious way as gaming that we felt that we were kind of outside or maybe even lesser in some ways. I’ve never felt that, but I could sense it,” he said. “The fact that you take one of the greatest creators from our industry and you can have success in creating in another medium, I just think it shows that in the games industry, you have some amazing storytellers, amazing creators across all third-party, first-party.”
He continued, reflecting on what gaming has delivered in 2023. “As an industry, when I think about this year, I do think about the state of production in AAA games, and games have become really big. Every year, people have bigger ideas and bigger plans for the games that we’re building. But ensuring that teams are set up for success in the games that we’re building across the industry, that do we really have kind of the necessary skills on production to make sure that when we make commitments to our customers about when games are coming, we can deliver at the quality and the timing that we expect,” he said.
“I think these are good questions for us as an industry right now. We’re always learning, we’re always evaluating the tools that we have and the process we have and the creative that we put out. There were some great games in 2022. There’ll be some great games in 2023, and this industry will continue to evolve and innovate in ways that hopefully delight players.” Without further ado, here are our picks from Walmart‘s video game sale.
