4 New Year's Eve Party Themes Say 'So Long' 2011

If you’re skipping a night out this New Year’s Eve, you should consider throwing your own party. You could just provide plenty of champagne and noisemakers, or you could amuse guests by insisting that they ring in 2012 by paying homage to some of what made 2011 special.

There’s no better way to prepare for the New Year than by saying good riddance to some of the more memorable parts of the past year with a themed party. Check out our list of five fun theme ideas below!

1. Extreme Weather BlowoutBeginning with Snowpocalypse here in the Northeast way back in February, the crazy and often dangerous weather made 2011 exciting (though not necessarily in a good way). Luckily for the party host, there’s a cocktail named for almost every natural disaster that hit this year, from the hurricane (fruit juice, grenadine and rum) to the more old fashioned earthquake (equal parts absinthe and cognac). Mix up some drinks and invite guests to use their favorite meteorological event as their outfit inspiration.

2. Protest PartySend out a Facebook invite to your protest-themed party. From the protests in Tahrir Square to Zuccotti Park, 2011 seemed to be the year of mass public unrest. Keep your guests happy with plenty of pizza and count down to midnight with a drum circle. Decorations can include protest signs from the protest of your choice. Just be sure to leave the pepper spray at the door.

3. The One Percent Gala—You haven’t been able to hear anything about Occupy Wall Street protesters without also hearing about the infamous one percent. This gala should be much more extravagant than your run of the mill New Year’s Eve party. Break out your finest china, drink copious amounts of the best champagne and, to decorate, hang diamonds from your chandeliers. Request that honored guests come dressed to the nines—not like the ninety-nine percent.

4. Celebrity Breakup BashWelcoming the New Year necessarily means that there are parts of the old year that must remain in the past. Celebrity relationships are one of these things and 2011 saw the demise of many high-profile relationships. Hold on to them for one last night at your celebrity breakup themed New Years Eve party. Tell your friends to pair up and dress up as the celeb couple they’ll miss the most and collectively bid adieu to Kim and Kris, Demi and Ashton and the like at the stroke of midnight.
