Big updates to announce in the world of Snapchat, people: The social media app is rolling out two major new features today: paid replays, and a selfie-altering mode called “Lenses.” Here’s the 411.
Paid replays.
Most of Snapchat’s appeal lies with the fact that images and videos vanish 24 hours after viewing (eh, except for when they don’t), and while you’re able to replay one already-viewed message a day, you can now buy extra replays for about a buck. From the app’s site: “Snapchatters can purchase extra Replays, starting at 3 for $0.99. You can use a Replay on any Snap you receive, but you can only Replay any Snap once.
And in case you’re rolling your eyes at the absurdity of shelling out cash for this feature, well, Snapchat’s right there with you, writing: They’re a little pricey — but time is money! ;)”
Lenses
The next big update,”Lenses,” is 100% free and basically lets you add Photo Booth-esque effects to your snaps when you’re taking photos of yourself. The lenses will pop up automatically when your camera’s in selfie mode, and you activate them by pressing and holding your virtual face. Keep in mind these aren’t pretty Instagram-like filters, but rather actual effects like having a striped tongue or appearing older than you are. Fun!
