Instagram's Latest Video Feature Will Show View Counts

Just in case your Instagram engagement didn’t give you enough anxiety already (anyone else delete their photos if they don’t get a certain number of likes in a certain amount of time? No? Just me?), TechCrunch reports that, starting next week, you’ll be able to see exactly how many people have viewed your videos in addition to the amount of likes they’ve received. That means that if your video racks up 500 views but only 5 likes, you’ll know it … and so will everyone else.

Don’t start stressing just yet: Instagram’s hope is that, with 400 million active users, video creators will actually be encouraged to produce more on the platform thanks to higher-than-expected view counts. Though we generally associate Instagram with, well, Instagrams, the fact is that the video feature is downright booming, with watch time up 40 percent in the past six months. That’s pretty huge.

Needless to say, Instagram wants to better its chances at becoming an actual destination for video producers, amateur or otherwise, to craft clips specifically for their feeds—plus, the potential for ad buyers to see their view counts could encourage marketers to spend more money on their Instagram campaigns by proving just how great their reach could be.

But let’s focus on what matters here: Soon, you’ll be able to see who watched your videos, even if they didn’t publicly like them. We should all be a little more wary next time we’re browsing our ex’s new girlfriend’s feed—this new threat is almost as bad as accidentally liking a photo from 54 weeks ago.
