Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco’s ‘Ojos Tristes’ Samples a Very Popular Spanish Song After She Was Accused of ‘Butchering’ the Language
Selena Gomez is basking in her Spanish roots. She just released her joint album with her fiance Benny Blanco, “I Said I Loved You First” and it involves lots of fun collaborators.
The fourth song of the album “Ojos Tristes” features María Zardoya of the band The Marías, and interporlates Spanish singer Jeanette’s 1980s hit “El Muchacho de los Ojos Tristes.” Selena joins in Spanish with María during the chorus and pre-chorus and it’s a lovely tribute and poignant ballad about a boy who finally finds love. In case you don’t remember, this isn’t Selena’s first project in Spanish. She released a Spanish EP Revelación in 2021.
The song comes on the heels of Selena Gomez being criticized of “butchering” Spanish when starred in the Oscar nominated Netflix film Emilia Perez. Gomez seems aware that the issue of her Spanish in Emilia Peréz is a topic of a lot of discussion, telling Remezcla, “I definitely wish I had more time [to prep]. It was wonderful.
