Sabrina Carpenter isn’t holding back on her thoughts about incompetent men. The Grammy Award-winning singer just released her new song “Manchild” and she’s pretty straightforward about what she thinks about her ex.

Sabrina debuted the song on June 5, 2025, and revealed that she wrote the song with frequent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen. She wrote in an Instagram caption, “Not only was it so fun to write, but this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life.”

She continued, “It sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer ! hence why i wanted to give it to you now- so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!”

Who is Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild” about?

After she released the teaser for “Manchild” on social media, many people speculated that “Manchild” was about her ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan. The Saltburn actor and the singer dated for nearly a year from December 2023 to December 2024. So when Sabrina posted, “This one’s about YOU!” on her socials, people started to fan the flames.

Sabrina starts off the song with a pretty punch, singing “You said your phone was broken, just forgot to charge it / Whole outfit you’re wearing, God, I hope it’s ironic.” While Barry is a fashion ambassador for Burberry, there are some questionable outfits that he has donned (ahem, the Met Gala). Sabrina then goes on a savage tirade about calling her former lover a “manchild” and telling him that he doesn’t have a brain.

The fun comes in the bridge where she reveals, “Oh, I like my boys playing hard to get / And I like my men all incompetent.” Is this a dig at ALL of her exes? Maybe. She did put it in her thank you notes, “Thank you men for testing me!”

Sabrina Carpenter “Manchild” Lyrics

[Intro]
Oh, boy

[Verse 1]
You said your phone was broken, just forgot to charge it
Whole outfit you’re wearing, God, I hope it’s ironic
Did you just say you’re finished? Didn’t know we started
It’s all just so familiar, baby, what do you call it?

[Pre-Chorus]
Stupid
Or is it slow?
Maybe it’s useless
But there’s a cuter word for it, I know

[Chorus]
Man-child
Why you always come a-running to me?
Fuck my life
Won’t you let an innocent woman be?
Never heard of self-care
Half your brain just ain’t there
Man-child
Why you always come a-running, taking all my loving from me?

[Verse 2]
Why so sexy if so dumb?
And how survive the Earth so long?
If I’m not there, it won’t get done
I choose to blame your mom

[Chorus]
Man-child
Why you always come a-running to me?
Fuck my life
Won’t you let an innocent woman be?
Never heard of self-care
Half your brain just ain’t there
Man-child
Why you always come a-running, taking all my loving from me?

[Bridge]
Oh, I like my boys playing hard to get
And I like my men all incompetent
And I swear they choose me, I’m not choosing them
Amen, hey, men
Oh, I like my boys playing hard to get (Play hard to get)
And I like my men all incompetent (Incompetent)
And I swear they choose me, I’m not choosing them (Not choosing them)
Amen (Amen), hey, men (Hey, men)

[Chorus]
Man-child
Why you always come a-running to me? (Always come a-running to me)
Fuck my life
Won’t you let an innocent woman be? (Amen)
