If you managed to stop crying on the bathroom floor and get to work today after this morning’s reports that One Direction is—sob—breaking up, you’re faring better than a lot of Directioners, who are collectively losing their minds on Twitter right now.
According to Us Magazine, the world’s buzziest boy band is calling it quits after five insanely successful years. The news comes five months after bandmates Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles announced they would begin an extended hiatus in March.
Apparently the boys decided “not to renew their recording contract” after October’s tour, with Us Magazine’s source adding: “The 1D thing just ran its course. They’ll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers.”
The rumor is that Liam (the hot one who can grow facial hair) wants to get into songwriting and production, Harry’s interested in acting, and Louis, 24, will be busy in his new role as a first-time dad (you nearly forgot he was having a baby, didn’t you?).
Of course, this isn’t the time the world’s speculated about an impending 1D split, and Horan did deny the rumors last November to Entertainment Tonight, saying: “We’re not breaking up. We’re literally taking time out to see our friends and see our family and reflect on what we’ve done over the last few years.”
In all fairness, between these ongoing rumors and fifth member Zayn Malik abruptly exiting the band in March 2015, it’s been a rough year for Directioners, but fans are handling today’s news with a particularly unhealthy level of denial. Their theories about the news range from it being a misunderstanding to a full-blown media conspiracy. Someone send grief counseling their way, stat.
Here are some of our favorite tweets from One Direction fans in complete denial this morning:
Some sources say @onedirection split up. I don’t believe it, I will wait for the end of the hiatus until the boys say they are quitting!

The media is doing this to get attention, they want us to believe that One Direction is going to break up. Don’t believe a word they say.

If one direction wanted to break up so badly why wouldn’t they just tell us straight up?
