The Empress Netflix
Netflix

The Empress might not be Netflix’s most popular period drama—that honor is undoubtedly Bridgerton’s—but that doesn’t mean the German series is without fans. In fact, the second season of the show, which is based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria has quickly cracked the streamer’s Top 10, prompting fans to wonder if a third season might be in the way.

In the show, like in real life, Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, or “Sisi” (Devrim Lingnau) falls in love with Emperor Franz Joseph (Philip Froissant). The two go on to marry and face life at the Viennese Court, a life that looks to change Elizabeth’s free-spirited disposition and mold her according to the rules other people have set for her.

The second season of the show sees the couple try to navigate court life, and deal with boy great joy in their personal life and devastating loss. But that’s not all, because political maneuvering never ends, particularly when you are royalty—and both Franz and Elizabeth are forced to also deal with a very real war and powerful adversaries that threaten not only their country but their marriage.

With the second season not coming close to telling the full story of Elizabeth and Franz, is there a chance there will be a third season of The Empress? And if so, what can we expect to see happen with the main characters?

Will there be a Season 3 of The Empress?

The Empress Elizabeth and Franz

Netflix has not yet renewed The Empress for Season 3. However, the show is loosely based on the life of Elisabeth or “Sisi,” Empress of Austria, and there’s still a significant portion of her life to tell since she doesn’t die until she’s 60. That means that it is likely the show will return to Netflix for Season 3, especially considering the reception it’s gotten and the fact that, as a German production, it’s actually cheaper for Netflix than most US-based productions.

The show, which also stars Melika Foroutan as Sophie, Archduchess of Austria, Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian, Almila Bagriacik as Countess Leontine von Apafi, Jördis Triebel as Ludovika, Duchess in Bavaria, Elisa Schlott as Helene, Josephine Thiesen as Princess Marie Charlotte of Belgium and Christophe Favre as Napoleon III, still has plenty of story to tell not just when it comes to Elizabeth and Franz, but also when it comes to the decline of the Austrian empire, which is the biggest background storyline.

The streamer doesn’t usually renew shows until they have debuted and there’s some data, and the data for the show heavily supports a new season. However, even if a new season is coming, it could be a while before it premieres. There was, after all, a two-year wait between Season 1 and Season 2, with Season 1 premiering in September 2022 and the second season just debuting in November 2024.

A long wait is, however, better than a cancellation and fans will surely take it over the alternative. And if a renewal is coming, it’s likely we will hear about it soon considering the release date and the numbers.
