The first Moana was a big success, which sort of explains why Moana 2 goes as hard as it does. The movie truly doesn’t pull any new punches as the titular hero Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) embarks on a new journey across the ocean to lift a curse and restore a lost island. There’s also a villainous god, because of course there is, and the return of Moana’s Maui (Dwayne Johnson).
Moana 2, like other Disney sequels, tells a full story but also seems to clearly set up a sequel. It does so by introducing a huge change for the main character and the people around her. Whether that means we will indeed get a Moana 3 might depend on how well Moana 2 does at the box office, but with Disney+ a new avenue for stories to be told, there’s always the possibility that even if we don’t get another movie, we will see this character again.

With that in mind, we can break down the ending of Moana 2 and discuss exactly what happened to the titular character and what that means for the story going forward. What happened to Moana? Did she lift the curse? Did she die? Does Moana become a Demigod in Moana 2? We’ve got all the answers right here.

Yes, Moana becomes a Demigod in Moana 2. The big twist at the end of the movie is the death of Moana as she restores the lost island of Motufetu. But Moana doesn’t stay dead, instead, she’s revived as a demigod. How, exactly does this happen? Well, this is Disney, so let’s just say the ocean and her ancestors’ spirits revive her.
Before this happens, we see Maui try to raise the island of Motufetu out of the water, but he is stripped of his powers by the movie’s main villain, Nalo. Now alone on the quest to break the curse, Moana dives into the ocean and manages to reach the shores of the island—the curse will be broken when she touches the shore—but is hit by Nalo’s lightning in the process.
Thankfully, Moana doesn’t die, though we don’t have a clear picture of what it means for her to be a demigod. Presumably, she’s now immortal and has a stronger connection to the ocean, and she can probably now also explore new lands and connect with different communities all while keeping her tribe safe from big threats like Nalo.
It is the mid-credits scene in Moana 2 that hints at the possibility of a third movie. In this mid-credits scene, we see Moana’s two villains teaming up, which is a nice setup for a possible trilogy to round off the story. Of course, Disney still hasn’t announced a third movie, but between Moana’s new powers and this hint, there’s a big possibility that if the movie does well enough at the box office we will be privy to how far Moana can still go.
On the future of Moana, director David Derrick Jr. told The Wrap, “We set out to tell a story about ongoing evolution and growth. [The movie] starts with that hermit crab that is brave enough to leave its shell to find a new one. What this new role is for Moana, nobody knows fully yet. That’s part of the beauty of life, is that we never know truly what we will become, but every day, we get to choose who we are. But I love that we leave that door open.”
