Travis Kelce might be one step closer to retirement this year. His brother Jason Kelce just revealed how the discussions were going on with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and what it means for his future.
Travis Kelce has until March 14 to decide whether he wants to retire. He previously brushed away the retirement rumors ahead of the NFL 2024 Wildcard game. The Kansas City Chiefs tight-end was asked if he was still thinking about retirement during a press conference. He joked, “You guys think about retirement? Am I the only one in that boat?”
“I have no reason to stop playing football. I love it,” he shared at the time. “I just love the challenge it gives me every single day to try and be at my best.” However, after the Kansas City Chiefs’ disappointing loss at the Super Bowl, the rumors seemed to increase tenfold.
“I’m gonna take some time to figure it out,” Travis said on his podcast New Heights. “I think I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back that it’s gonna be a wholehearted decision and I’m not half-a—ing it.” He continued, “I think I can play, it’s just whether or not I’m motivated or it’s the best decision for me as a man, as a human, as a person to take on all that responsibility.”
Jason Kelce said that he talked to Travis “a lot” about the topic of retirement. In an appearance on Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson’s podcast The Steam Room, he explained that Travis was there for him during his retirement discussions and he’ll be sure to return the favor.
“I’m sure we will talk about it, we’ve already talked about it a little bit,” Jason continued. “And I’m sure he’s going to go through a process of figuring that out.” The former Philadelphia Eagles player hinted that his brother “probably, in his heart, already knows what he wants to do.”
“We’re very similar people, but we also have different ways of thinking about things. And sometimes I can way overanalyze situations, and my brother has this way of being like, ‘Hey man, you want to play or you don’t want to play,’” Jason explained. “He’ll say something like that where it’s just like, ‘Don’t worry about all of these minor things.’ And nine times out of 10, he’s right about all of it.”
Though, Travis Kelce has a huge incentive not to retire. If he chooses to stay on the Chiefs, he will receive a $12.5 million roster bonus, according to Spotrac. As for why Jason retired, he cited that he wanted to be closer to his family and that lingering injuries could prevent him from spending time with them in the long run.
No matter his decision, his girlfriend Taylor Swift will be by his side no matter what. There have been rumors swirling that the two would be engaged after the Super Bowl, but it didn’t seem to happen. “Taylor will support him either way,” one source told Us Weekly. Another source added: “Taylor and Travis work so well [together]. They’re still madly in love, and their relationship just keeps getting better and better.”
As for whether Taylor Swift will perform at the Super Bowl, she’s waiting until her BF hangs up his jersey. “She doesn’t want to do it now until Travis is fully retired as she would like to be at the game supporting him rather than performing at it,” a source told Daily Mail. “When she eventually performs at it, she wants all her loved ones to be able to experience it. And as long as Travis is in the league, the Chiefs have a chance to be in the game, so she is going to wait to do it till he is officially done.”
