John Cena is embracing his retirement tour, but one simple act could change the future of his game forever. The WWE staple made a statement by doing a turned heel, and fans are absolutely shocked.

On March 2, John Cena won the men’s Elimination Chamber match. Top champion Cody Rhodes congratulated him and was seemingly there to answer The Rock’s question if he would sell his soul to him. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson emerged with Travis Scott in the ring and Rhodes declined. John Cena leaned in to congratulate him when his appearance went form happy to menacing while The Rock made a cut throat gesture in the background. Cena then attacked Rhodes with a Rolex watch while The Rock beat him with his own belt.

So what does this mean for the future of John Cena’s arc in the WWE?

What Does Turned Heel Mean in WWE?

Turned Heel means that a WWE wrestler has turned from good (more commonly referred to as face or baby face) to evil. More specifically, John Cena’s heel turn was one of the most powerful moments in the franchise’s history because of how late he’s done it in his career.

That doesn’t mean to say that he’ll have a redemption arc before he leaves the ring for good. The last time Cena turned babyface was in 2003—meaning that he’s been playing good for the last twenty-two years. Even with a short amount of time left, he still could still turn around to be a babyface to complete his story and do another victory lap. “Proud to say I have lived a life where I grew up watching face john cena as a kid and witnessed his heel turn on his last run as an adult,” one fan posted on X. Another fan posted, “They said it would never happen, but holy s—t I am in pure disbelief. Cena finally turned heel and it was done perfectly. Sold his soul to the corporate power. May go down as one of the most unexpected heel turns of all time (close to Hogan).”

Cena previously announced his retirement in May 2024. He’s set to retire this year in 2025. “I’ve been doing this for a while, I’ve been in WWE for over two decades, and in that time I’ve seen incredible waves of prosperity like we have right now,” he said. “WWE is the hottest ticket in town, no doubt. And I’ve also seen tremendous hardship, and that’s when no one knows your name, no one wants to be your friend, and only the most dedicated, hardcore fans stand by your side.”
