Jason Isaacs
HBO

Another The White Lotus season, another episode that has a nudity cameo. Jason Isaacs got real about that nudity scene amid the chaos that’s going on with his character.

In episode four of Season 3 of the HBO dramedy satire show, Timothy Ratliff’s empire is on the brink of collapse after the feds caught on with his company’s money laundering and bribery. In a brief moment of coping, he steals his wife Victoria’s (Parker Posey) Lorazepam. The matriarch grills her children Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), Lochlan (Sam Nivola), and Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) on who took her medication. After Tim lays back on his robe, his penis emerges and shocks the family into embarrassment.

The scene joins a long list of nudity on the show, but was his nudity scene real or was he using a prosthetic?

Was Jason Isaacs’ penis real in The White Lotus?

Jason Isaac’s full frontal moment on The White Lotus was indeed a prosthetic. Co-star Sam Nivola told TV Insider that it was fake, “It was really funny. He was very excited to do it. I think he took pride in the prosthetic,” Hook says of Isaacs with a laugh. “He’s like, ‘It’s my fake dick scene today!’”

Nivola and Hook also confirmed that the penis was fake. “That wasn’t his real penis,” Nivola said, to which Hook added, “It was a prosthetic.”

“I don’t remember filming those scenes,” Isaacs joked with Decider. “I think it’s digital. I wasn’t there that day.” In season 2 of the show, Theo James revealed that his penis was a prosthetic for a scene.

Isaacs wanted to pull off Mike White’s vision for the show as well as his intention for the scene. “Look, he’s trying to right the balance of how many naked women I’ve seen growing up on every television show and film,” Isaacs said. “Nudity is the thing. He uses it sometimes for comedy, sometimes for sex, sometimes the manipulation. It’s a good TV moment.”

Isaacs also said that nudity is “not something I’m keen on doing in my social life or in my professional life.” But he said, “But it’s Mike White,” he said, “and it’s a great moment in the show.”

He went in more in-depth about how his character hit this rock-bottom moment in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “He’s drugging himself into a stupor to try not to think about the fact that his entire life is blowing up and trying to work out what to do about it,” Isaacs recalled. “It was actually quite challenging — I remember reading the scripts thinking, ‘Wow, I’ve got to keep my powder dry for five or six episodes, and then this s— really kicks off.’ You haven’t seen other things that are coming, but I just remember thinking, ‘I better dig deep and produce something here,’ because there’s a lot of parts you can go through and tell a very dramatic story without your character going through anything extreme. But there’s some big, old acting coming up.”

He also reflected on Timothy’s arc for the rest of the season and how it was a mentally challenging role. “I don’t know how I pulled it off,” he says. “The audience will see whether I did or not. It’ll be up to them to judge, but I just remember thinking, ‘I’ve got to go big — go big or go home.’ And then when things happen that I can’t talk about particularly, something else had to kick in, and there’s a mania and a terror that you have to access. You’ve got to get there. I mean, you’ve got to be as real as you can. And yeah, there was some inner gear changes required.”
