Adolescence
Netflix

Adolescence is one of those shows that comes out of nowhere to become a big hit for Netflix, and in many ways, it’s easy to see why. It tackles an important subject, and it does so in a way that feels respectful. It’s also very well-acted, shot, and written. Plus, the show has created conversation about a topic that feels like we should be discussing these days.

From creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, the series follows a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller who is arrested for the murder of a classmate. Creator Graham discussed his aim for making the show with Netflix, saying, “One of our aims was to ask, ‘What is happening to our young men these days, and what are the pressures they face from their peers, from the internet, and from social media? And the pressures that come from all of those things are as difficult for kids here as they are the world over.’”

But what is the story of Jamie Miller based on? Who is Jamie Miller in real life from Adolescence? Is he a real person? Here’s what we know.

Who’s Jamie Miller in real life from Adolescence

Graham and Thorne didn’t base Jamie Miller on one particular person, meaning there’s not one Jamie Miller whose story they’re exactly recreating. Graham, however, told Tudum that he was inspired by a series of recent stabbings by younger men. There have been quite a few to be inspired about, some cases receiving much more publicity than others.

“There was an incident where a young boy (allegedly) stabbed a girl,” Graham said. “It shocked me. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death? What’s the inciting incident here?’ And then it happened again, and it happened again, and it happened again. I really just wanted to shine a light on it, and ask, ‘Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How have we come to this?’”

One such example is the case of 15-year-old Elianne Andam, who was stabbed to death in London in September of 2023 by Hassan Sentamu, who was 17 at the time. He was sentenced to 23 years in March 2025. The girl was murdered over a teddy bear.

Another recent example, and perhaps the most high profile one, was that of the so-called Southport killer Axel Rudakubana, who was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years for killing three girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in July 2024. The charges also included attempting to murder 10 other people. Considering the show was shot around this time, this is unlikely to be the inspiration for the show, but it just underscores how many similar cases there are for Graham and Thorne to be inspired by.

Statistics from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 83% of teen homicides in 2023-24 involved a blade, which is the weapon of choice in the miniseries Adolescence.

In January, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer referenced a new terror threat: “loners, misfits and young men” who are “accessing all manner of material online, sometimes inspired by traditional terrorist groups, but fixated on that extreme violence, seemingly for its own sake.” Adolescence was released just a few months later.
