SNL is one of those shows that changes a lot depending on the host and musical guest, but in many ways, it doesn’t really change all that much if you think about it. There’s usually a cold open. There’s a monologue. There are sketches. The show will make fun of what’s going on in the country, particularly in politics. There will be some music. At the end, everyone involved in the particular episode will stand on the stage to say goodbye until the credits roll. Or, at least, that’s how it usually goes.
The latest Saturday Night Live episode, hosted by Oscar-winning actress Mikey Madison, who won for her role in Anora, and singer Morgan Wallen, is already being deemed controversial—not because of who the show made fun of, but because of what happened at the end. Right as the entire cast got on stage to celebrate the end of the episode, singer Wallen whispered something in Madison’s ear and then walked off stage.

Calling that abnormal would be an understatement. And since it happened, fans have been wondering not just what Wallen could have said to Madison but why exactly he walked off the stage. So, why did Morgan Wallen walk off SNL, and what did he say to Mikey Madison? Here’s what we know.

There’s been no official confirmation as to why Wallen walked off or what he said to Madison, though fans have their theories. One X user said, “Morgan Wallen saying “I’m just tired” on the hot mic then just walking off stage. Lol,” while another one added that “Morgan Wallen said I didn’t want to be here either. That’s exactly what the show gets for having him in the first place.”
After walking off abruptly during the goodbyes part of the show, Wallen posted a picture of a private jet on his Instagram stories with a caption that read: “Get me to God’s country.”
Wallen’s team indicated that the singer had gotten so used to leaving the stage that way during rehearsals, he just did so naturally, with sources telling ET the move was “planned.” However, according to an exclusive Deuxmoi source, the singer’s behavior during the week before the show was less than stellar. The source mentions “a bunch of meltdowns” and mentions that Wallen pulled out of numerous commitments, categorizing his behavior as “incredibly immature.”
According to Deuxmoi’s source, Wallen’s primary focus was to “perform, get paid, and get out of there,” using words like “tantrums” to explain Wallen’s lack of desire to be fully involved in the process. And fans seem to have seen right through Wallen. “Morgan Wallen is the first musical guest or host on SNL that I can recall who just walked off stage during ‘goodnights’ before the credits even started to roll,” one viewer wrote, with another one adding “Morgan Wallen walking off before the snl credits were even over… yeah there’s a special place in hell for that man.”
Ironically, this isn’t even Wallen’s first SNL-related controversy. In 2020, the singer was dropped as a musical guest after he was caught partying without a mask during a time of heavy COVID-19 restrictions. Now, he broke the unwritten rules of the show by walking off stage right away, as if he was in a hurry to leave. Not a good look, no matter the reason.
