Hulu and FX’s latest dramedy is based on the breathtaking true story of a cancer patient who wants to get freaky. Dying for Sex is based on the life of Molly Hachan (Michelle Williams), who left her husband in order to pursue new sexual escapades with more than 200 men.

The adventures were recapped in the podcast of the same name which Molly and her caretaker Nikki Boyer friend spearheaded. Molly was diagnosed with breast cancer at 41 in 2015 after previously beating the disease in 2011. She talked about her decision to divorce her husband in the first episode. “Sexually, we had difficulties before cancer came along,” Molly said of her marriage with her ex husband. “Right before I got diagnosed, I was kind of looking to recharge our sex life… and then cancer showed up.” She revealed that her body “needed to be touched” so as a result, she left her husband.

In the show, Molly’s husband is fictionalized, is named Steve, and is played by Jay Duplass. But who was her husband in real life?

Where’s Molly Kochan’s ex-husband now?

Molly Kochan’s ex-husband is Alexx Henry Oanes. According to LinkedIn, he is the CEO of his own company that works on personalized 3D avatars. He used to be a celebrity photographer. Even though they split in 2015, he still continued to support Molly amid her cancer treatment by posting Instagram photos of her. Alongside her friends, he celebrated his ex-wife’s life in an event called Mollebration a year after her death.

In a blog post detailing her departure from her husband, the podcaster wrote about her marriage, “The truth is, without this diagnosis I probably would have stayed, continued to try to make things work. Because there is a lot of love there. But there is also a lot of stress. And a stressful environment is not a good one when battling cancer.”

By the time she died in 2019 at the age of 45, Kochan had slept with over 183 men. “For a long time with sex—and this is why I had a problem in my marriage—I was really, really, really good at figuring out what other people liked and then I could simulate that like an actor for them,” Kochan said on her podcast. “But I never really knew what I liked.”
