The Gardner
Netflix

The Gardner is a Spanish psychological thriller series on Netflix that follows Elmer (Álvaro Rico), a local gardener who, after a car accident when he was a kid, was left unable to feel emotions. This is all very well for his mother, who just so happens to run a murder-for-hire business. Who is a better assassin than someone who doesn’t feel anything? It sounds like the beginning of a very lucrative business.

Except, when Elmer meets his latest target, preschool teacher Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), it’s like his emotions come back at the worst possible moment. Or the best, depending on how you look at it. Elmer is happy for the first time in his life. His mother not so much. Business is, after all, about to take a big hit. That’s the background for a show that is less about gardening than it sounds. And one that ends up being way funnier than the words psychological thriller makes it seem.

But one of the things people have been wondering about The Gardner, one of Netflix’s international offerings, has been about the beautiful setting. Where are Elmer, Violeta, and Elmer’s mom, played by Cecilia Suárez (The House of Flowers) in? Where was The Gardner filmed? And since the show is spoken entirely in Spanish and set in Spain, was it filmed in Spain, too?

Where was The Gardener Filmed?

The Gardner was primarily filmed in the Spanish cities of Pontevedra, Toledo, and Madrid. From watching the movie, it becomes clear that Toledo was the primary filming location of the Netflix series. The seaside scenes, however, were filmed in Pontevedra, in Galicia, with the parts that look to be more like a big city filmed in Madrid.

Considering the differences between the three Spanish locations, they were likely chosen because of just that—how distinct they were from each other. Pontevedra offers numerous Roman ruins, while Toledo brings a historic and picturesque town with an ancient walled settlement and Madrid is a big capital city with large streets and big gardens, like El Parque del Retiro.

All of this means the production of The Gardner was able to create a fictional place that brings together elements from all three places where they filmed and that adds to the suspense of a series that feels a little bit like You meets The House of Flowers. And though, in truth, you are not supposed to be paying attention to your surroundings as Elmer and his mother are considering who to kill—or who not to kill, it’s hard to look away when the surroundings are as beautiful as these.

Plus, since the show was filmed at spots that are easily accessible, it’s pretty easy for viewers to stroll up to some of the most recognizable spots from the show in Toledo, Pontevedra, and Madrid, without the murder part.
