The newest Netflix western series will tug on your heartstrings. Ransom County stars Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly where their deeply rooted country characters are locked in a contest for control of the land.
The lush series features stunning visuals of nature, like the vast countryside and deserts of Texas. Creator and showrunner April Blair told Netflix’s Tudum that viewers will appreciate the show for its plot and the scenery. “I think people are going to fall in love with this little slice of Texas and the dramas and romances that we created there,” she recounted.

However, one big twist in the series actually happens behind the scenes.
Ransom Canyon was filmed at the Los Poblanos Inn & Organic Farm and nearby ranches in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and parts in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though it might be disappointing to hear that the series isn’t filmed where it’s supposed to be, creator and showrunner April Blair assures that the western atmosphere is still there. “Honestly, you can actually see Texas from some of the ranches,” she told Tudum. “Mood and topography-wise, it’s very, very similar.”
Netflix reported that they hired New Mexican locals to help film the series. The streaming giant reportedly hired more than 700 New Mexicans to work on the series, including 380 crew members, 300 background actors, and 40 principal actors. They also have their own designated studio in the state, with other series like Stranger Things, Army of the Dead and The Harder They Fall were also filmed in the area.
Minka Kelly originally grew up in the area, and didn’t imagine herself returning to film there. “I’ve never had to shoot in Albuquerque until this show,” she told Netflix’s Tudum. “I was afraid to go back because I hadn’t really been there since my childhood, which wasn’t the best.”
She explained, “Going back in this way just took away the boogeyman. There were places I visited from my childhood that I would think, ‘Man, if the Minka at that time would have ever imagined I’d be back here shooting this show, I never would have believed it.’ It was really beautiful and there’s something divine about it.”
