Rose West and her husband Fred were most notorious serial killer duos in the history of Britain. After three decades after she was sentenced to life in prison, details of her daily errands behind bars have been slowly revealed over the years.
Fred was known to have sadistic tendencies and wooed a teenage Rose to join him on his killing sprees. Rose’s first victim was her step-daughter from Fred’s first marriage. The couple would lure young women to their home in 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester. Among the victims include Shirley Hubbard, 15, Carol Ann Cooper, 15, Alison Chambers, 16, Shirley Robinson, 18, Juanita Mott, 18, Anne McFall, 18, Lynda Gough, 19, Theresa Siegnethaler, 21, Lucy Partington, 21, and even their 16-year-old daughter Heather.
Fred was arrested in 1992 and confessed that Rose was an accomplice in the murder for Shirley Hubbard. While awaiting trial, her husband died by suicide. In 1995, a jury convicted her guilty of all ten counts of murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment and a whole life tariff.
Rose West is still in jail, and due to the high-profile case, her prison life details have been widely reported. Tons of British tabloids like the Daily Mail have provided updates about her life behind bars since she was arrested and she is reportedly living “a life of luxury.”
“She doesn’t even leave her cell and they bring food to her,” a prison insider told the Daily Mail. Another serial killer Joanna Dennehy moved into her cell block in 2019, and she was forced to move after she threatened to kill her. “So she was gutted when she had to leave. She was in tears and the prison officers just packed her things up. She was really upset. She didn’t want to go. It’s been her home for more than ten years and West is an elderly woman. Low Newton is the highest security prison for women in the country and they had to send Dennehy there. She’s one of the UK’s most dangerous inmates. She said, ‘Send me there and I’ll f***ing kill Rose West.’ Prison officials took the threat seriously. They moved West to another prison because they said it was a massive security threat.”
Her first prison was in HMP Low Newton in Durham, and she was later transferred to top-security Low Newton. She is currently in New Hall jail in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
While she was in Low Newton, she had an en-suite cell, that was decked out with curtains at the window, a ‘fluffy rug’ on the floor and high standard appliances like a coffee machine, TV and radio. She also participated in bake-offs with fellow inmates. A source told Daily Star “West uses her cooking skills to win people over.
“There are some very violent women on the wing and a lot of them are very aggressive towards West because of her crimes. But she tends to defuse situations by offering other prisoners cakes and biscuits.”
In 1995, it was also reported that West had an affair with Myra Hindley. However, the two denied the affair when British tabloids were creating headlines off of the speculation. Hindley wrote in a letter, “I will be refuting claims that Rosemary West and myself have formed a “macabre” friendship, that we have ever held hands, prayed together in the chapel or anywhere else, cooked snacks for each other, watched television together in each other’s cells and that I sent her a “Good Luck’ card before the start of the trial or at any other time. Nor was I “fascinated” by her when she arrived on H-wing. She was on H-wing before I arrived and was just one of 44 immates.”
