Gantu, Stitch from Lilo & Stitch
Disney / Everett Collection

Disney live-action remakes are no stranger to fan backlash. It’s pretty rare for the studio to adapt a faithful live-action from the original animated source, and it was certain that many fans would be angry about one beloved character’s absence in Lilo & Stitch.

In the original film, Captain Gantu served as a second-in-command in the Galactic Federation and an enemy of Experiment 626 (later named Stitch). The antagonist is kicked out of the federation at the end of the film for failing to catch Stitch and wreaking havoc while doing so. Though his presence wasn’t as big as it was in the sequels and spin-offs, many fans raised their eyebrows at the decision.

“We tried to adapt it in a way that paid loving tribute to the original but wasn’t a one-to-one literal translation,” Director Dean Fleischer Camp shared in a statement to Disney about the imminent changes made in the live-action. “We were very clear-eyed about the fact that animation and live action are two completely different mediums. There are things you can do well in live-action that you can’t in animation, and vice versa.”

He added, “It was always our goal to make something that rhymed spiritually with the original film but was a little modernized.”

Why Wasn’t Gantu in Lilo & Stitch?

The producers made an executive decision to exclude Gantu from the Lilo & Stitch live-action movie. “Gantu was one of those things that just didn’t work so well in live action. We explored it a bit, but ultimately we had to make the decision,” Camp told CinemaBlend.

The filmmaker continued, “And also, I do stand by the decision, ’cause I feel like a lot of the things that, in trying to ground these characters more and tell a story with a little more emotional depth, especially between the sisters, I feel like you have to free up real estate to allow that breathing room to do those things.”

The internet went up in flames about the decision because Gantu had a very important part in the original movie and its sequels. “If there is no Gantu WHY IS THERE A LILO AND STICH MOVIE TO BEGIN WITH?! Another reason why Disney FAILS at remakes,” one fan posted on Reddit. Other fans of the OG defended the decision, adding that the absence was “probably because captain gantu has about 5 minutes of actual screen time in the original. It doesn’t make sense from a budget standpoint point on a remake that is supposed to be somewhat different to spend a boat load of money on a character that literally is just a filler.”

Gantu wasn’t the only major change in the film. At the end of the live-action film, Nani gives Lilo’s guardianship to David and Tūtū so that she can go to college. This is a big departure from the original movie since Nani stays to rebuild their home, and Pleakley and Jumba join their family too.

However, Gantu’s absence might be addressed in upcoming live-action sequels, which are highly likely to be made by Disney. “It feels like it’s going to work very well, and it’s the kind of property that lends itself to more,” Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman told the Wall Street Journal. Since Gantu has more of a stake in the sequels because of his presence as Dr. Hamsterviel’s henchman in Stitch! The Movie and the Lilo & Stitch TV series, we’re hopeful that Disney can answer fans’ demands.
