New city, new do. If you watched the last two episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty, you might be wondering if Lola Tung really did cut her signature locks during her stay in Paris.

At the end of episode 10 of Season 3, Belly (played by Tung) goes to a hair salon to start a new. It’s sort of reminiscent of other characters like Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rachel from Friends, or maybe even Claire from Fleabag. “I think it’s really fitting and sort of lovely to see [Belly] in the tradition of all these other female main characters who chop their hair to feel different,” Han told Vogue.

During Season 3’s premiere, Belly’s boyfriend at the time, Jeremiah, told her to never get a haircut. This haircut in Paris represents a new independent era for Belly after she ended her engagement. “Hair can hold weight and memories and meaning, and I think this moment was the perfect time for her to cut hers,” Tung says. “Even earlier in the season, it is something that comes up with Jeremiah. He tells her to never cut her hair. I think her making this decision feels freeing, like a fresh start.”

“Her making the decision to cut her hair is coming at a moment when an old love from her past is returning,” the writer continued. “It feels very poetic to me that she’s looking to something new and wanting something new for the summer, and something old is coming back her way.”

Did Lola Tung really cut her hair in The Summer I Turned Pretty?

Lola Tung did get a haircut for The Summer I Turned Pretty, but she did not get all of her hair cut off for the transformative bob. The front of the bob is Lola’s real hair, but with TV magic, the back camouflages as a U-line wig.

“I was excited when I learned that Belly was getting a bob,” the actress told Vogue. “It’s nice to see her make that decision for herself, almost as a physical representation of the growth and change she’s experienced.”

Han told the publication that the actress only had her front pieces cut, and it was a challenge to find someone in Paris to do the job right. “I was super-nervous about it. Obviously, when you cut it, you are not going to know for sure how it’s going to look until you see it.”

In camaraderie with the young actress, Han also got her hair chopped off. “I covertly went in and got my hair cut,” Han told the site. “I have very thick hair, so if [the hairstylist] can do my hair, then he can do her hair. I’m just on set, so who cares if my hair doesn’t look good.”

Some fans had mixed feelings towards the bob, with lots of people online calling it an “ugly” bob. “cant even enjoy bellyconrad endgame because of that f—kass bob omg,” one person wrote on X. One person also wrote, “Idk why my mom even watches tsitp she’s complaining about belly every 5 secs saying her bob is ugly and she’s stupid but gags over bellyconrad.” Other people were clear fans, “Belly’s bob actually looks so fucking good like what.” As a writer who also recently got a f—kass bob and can rock it, I stand in solidarity with you Belly! Do what you want with your hair, and don’t let the haters get you down.
