Nicolle Kate, a 64-year-old yoga instructor from Miami Beach, Florida, was one of 23 contestants in The Golden Bachelor Season 2 cast led by Mel Owens. Mel, a 66-year-old lawyer and a retired NFL linebacker from Laguna Hills, California, was announced as the Season 2 Golden Bachelor on April 2025. However, less than two months later, he faced backlash for an interview he gave on the “MGoBlue Podcasts With Jon Jansen,” in which he claimed that the oldest woman he would date on The Golden Bachelor would be 60 years old when the producers asked, “What’s your preferences?” “I just said, ’45 to 60,’ just being honest,” Mel said on the podcast. “‘If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them.’ This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.”

He continued, “[The executive producer] goes, ‘But they’re going to be hot, don’t worry about it, don’t worry about it.’ He goes, ‘You can’t use the word cut,’ I go, ‘That’s an NFL term…’ They’ve got to be fit, because I stay in shape and workout and stuff. And I told them to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.”
After his interview, Mel faced backlash from Bachelor Nation, with Reality Steve reporting that ABC was considering replacing him as the Golden Bachelor. Mel apologized for his comments in an interview with Glamour in August 2025, in which he recalled a conversation between him and a 65-year-old female friend who called him out. “She said, ‘What you said was insensitive, and it’s just not who you are.’ My reference of dating was 39, 40 years old. I hadn’t dated in 26, 27 years. That’s what I told her,” he said. “She goes, ‘It doesn’t matter. You’ve said some things that are just incredibly wrong.’ And I go, ‘I’ve got to apologize.'”
What happened to Nicolle on The Golden Bachelor Season 2?
Nicolle was among the women who gave Mel a second chance; however, she came under controversy herself in Episode 2 when she was accused of monopolizing Mel’s time at a pool party. “I’m sorry, I’m attracted to him. We were half-naked in the pool,” Nicolle told the other women in defense of herself.
Cindy Cullers, a 60-year-old retired biomedical engineer from Austin, Texas, for her part, told producers, “I don’t share men very well… I am not okay. It’s getting real.” Terri Alani, a 71-year-old cosmetic dentist from Houston, Texas, also called out Nicolle in a conversation with her. “It’s kind of disrespectful. If you want to do that, go over to the side and do that,” she said.
After the episode, viewers gave Nicolle the first “villain” label of The Golden Bachelor Season 2. “That kiss looked like he was trying to tie a cherry stem with her tonsils along with CPR😬. Not romantic! Just icky!” a user wrote. “You signed up for this honey! Although I like Nicole buuuuuut girl that was like trying to climb on a tree lol. I love being more modest though. A man will know who’s desperate for attention,” another user commented. One more user added, “villian gotta vill! 😮.”
Other fans, however, defended Nicolle, noting that her cast mates knew that they were getting into by going on The Golden Bachelor. “I dont share men very well. You picked the right show to go on i guess,” a user wrote. Another user commented, “He is so not worth it lol…..he obviously didn’t mind…..he is a man ho.” One more user added, “I don’t understand a woman crying over a man she just met and not realizing that there are many other women there that also deserve the chance to be his ‘partner’”
As for what happened to Nicolle, Reality Steve hasn’t confirmed who Mel ended up with as his winner in The Golden Bachelor Season 2 finale. However, Mel hinted in an interview with USA Today that he prioritized finding love versus getting married again. “Love is a good thing, it fills your heart, it makes you feel better, and it gives you a purpose,” he said. “I liked being in love. That’s the ultimate goal.”
