One major character in Emily in Paris isn’t getting the spotlight that we hoped for, and there might be a good reason for it. Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo, is pretty much absent throughout the season, so what exactly happened to his character?

For a refresher, Gabriel and Emily’s (Lily Collins) relationship took a turn in Season 4 after a slow-burning romance that had been lingering ever since they met each other. At the end of the season, she calls things off with Gabriel and starts a romance with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) and ventures off to Rome.

Now, Season 5 might cause another twist in Gabriel and Emily’s relationship.

What Happened to Gabriel and Emily?

At the beginning of Season 5 of Emily in Paris, Gabriel becomes a chef on a yacht that travels across Greece, and is noticeably missing from the season. He shows up again at the end of the season in Rome and gives some heartfelt advice to Emily in a letter. But what exactly happens to his character, and will we see him in the future?

Why Isn’t Lucas Bravo in Season 5?

Emily in Paris director and executive producer Andrew Fleming revealed that Lucas Bravo had prior commitments when Season 5 was filmed. “He did have a commitment. He had a movie that he was doing,” he told Us Weekly. “So we worked around that.”

“We want to go on a journey,” he clarified. “At no point was Luke ever leaving the show permanently.”

But fear not, Emily in Paris lovers, because Lucas Bravo won’t be written out of the series. “He’s important. He’s part of the DNA of the show,” Fleming revealed. “When he and Emily are in a scene together, something undefinable happens. They have this chemistry. They do. There’s just something about the two of them that’s very watchable.”

The news comes after Lucas Bravo made critical comments about the direction of his character in Season 4. “Reading the script this final season, it was like ‘I don’t really like what he’s becoming and where the storyline is going,’” he shared at the Paley Center’s Emily in Paris: The Magic Behind the Scenes event. “At the end of the day, I’m just an actor, and I’m here to say my lines.”

“It makes me question if I want to be part of season 5 — because my contract ends at season 4. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self,” he told IndieWire at the time. “Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.”
