After 10 years and five seasons, Stranger Things officially ended with its series finale on New Year’s Eve 2025… or did it?
A week after what seemed to be the eighth and last episode of the Netflix show’s final season, a conspiracy theory emerged that there would be one more episode—Episode 9—released on January 7, 2026. The theory came about after fans discovered a website with the URL novembersixthnineteeneightyseven.com that had a countdown clock to January 7, 2026. The clock was in the same font as the style used in Stranger Things, which led fans to believe that the countdown was for a secret ninth episode.

Unfortunately, no. On January 7, 2026, the website’s layout changed to confirm that the countdown clock was fake and there wouldn’t be a ninth episode. “just because it got posted to tiktok doesn’t mean it’s true,” the website now reads with a clown emoji. “now go outside and touch some grass.”
The official Stranger Things Instagram also confirmed that the show was officially over by changing its biography on January 7, 2026, to read: “ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING.”

While the original Stranger Things series has concluded, the Stranger Things universe is far from done. Along with a documentary titled One Last Adventure, chronicling the filming of Season 5, set to release on January 12, 2026, Netflix also has two more Stranger Things projects in the works.
The first project is an animated spinoff titled Stranger Things: Tales of ’85, which is set between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original series and will follow Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Will Byers, Lucas Sinclair, and Max Mayfield as they investigate the mysteries of the Upside Down. (The animated characters will be voiced by new actors.)
The second spinoff is a live-action series that Stranger Things creators Ross Duffer and Matt Duffer have yet to reveal the premise for. “I do want to explain, just because people’s expectations go in certain directions: The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it,” Matt told Variety after the Stranger Things finale. “But it’s a completely different mythology.”
He continued, “So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining.”
The brothers also confirmed that there won’t be any characters from the original series in the second spinoff. “No common characters,” Matt confirmed. “We’re actually really excited, and it’s very exciting to work with a clean slate: completely new characters, new town, new world, new mythology.”
