Warning: Minor Gen V spoilers ahead. Gen V‘s penis scene a similar, viral scene from The Boys, and we have an explainer on how the life-sized genitalia came to be.

Gen V is a spin-off of The Boys, a superhero series which follows a team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their powers. Gen V, which premiered on September 29, 2023, is set in the same universe as The Boys and a group of young adult superheroes as they’re trained at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting run by Vought International, the same company that owns the Seven.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Asa Germann, who plays Sam in Gen V, explained how the characters’ ages play a part in their personal and superhero journeys. “In The Boys, we’re seeing a bunch of superheroes where they wound up,” he said. “But in this show, we aren’t only following the supes in terms of their journey about becoming supes. We’re following their journey in terms of how they’re becoming people and how they’re growing up and evolving and learning and creating relationships and destroying relationships — and really, at a core, figuring out what it means to be a hero. The thing that I love so much about our show is that we don’t actually really answer that question.”

As fans of The Boys know, the series pushes boundaries physically and figuratively, and Gen V is no different. Read on for an explainer of Gen V‘s penis scene and what happened behind the scenes.

Gen V‘s penis scene explained

Gen V‘s penis scene occurs at the end of Season 1, Episode 1, when Emma Meyer, also known as Little Cricket, has sex with another student at Goldolkin University, who asks her to user her powers to become small and climb his penis. A similar scene occurred in Season 3, Episode 1 of The Boys—the original Prime Video series that Gen V is a spin-off of—in which Termite, a supe who also has the power to shrink, climbs inside his partner’s penis at a party. As he’s pleasuring his partner from the inside, Termite sneezes from the amount of cocaine he snorted earlier in the party and shots back to up to normal size, exploding his partner from the inside and effectively killing him.

After the episode, Brett Geddes, who played Termite, posted an Instagram photo of him and his stunt double next to the life-size penis prop in the scene. “For those wondering…the dick is real Me and my stunt double @armbruster.stunts after each taking a turn jumping on the trampoline of coke. #theboys #theboystv @theboystv,” he wrote in the caption.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in June 2022, showrunner Eric Kripke explained how the penis scene came to be. “Once you realize you’re gonna do a tiny Ant-Man character, you have to have that Ant-Man run up someone’s butt and then blow them up,” he said. “But then we realized that we already had blown up someone’s ass.” That would be Translucent and his lost battle with the anal pipe bomb in Season 1. “There’s only so many orifices a person can go in. So really, by process of elimination, you [have to] run into a urethra.”

To his surprise, Prime Video was “cool” with the scene, though they did have one request. “You’re not supposed to show an erect penis,” Kripke explains. “So we had to be very careful with the design of the penis — ’cause we built it practically. That’s a real 11-foot-high, 30-foot-long penis built at great expense. But if you look at it, we had to design in all these wrinkles to make it clear that it wasn’t erect. So, anyway, it’s exhibit 7,023 why I love this job.”

Star Karen Fukuhara also revealed her and Tomer Capone’s reactions when their characters, Kimiko and Frenchie, rushed into the room after Termite killed his partner. “They did such a wonderful job of making it hilarious, and also kind of tragic at the same time,” she told Entertainment Weekly, adding that she and Capone were “literally blown away by this sequence.” She continued, “When Termite sneezes and he explodes out of the guy, he has this look of horror on his face, and then Frenchie comes in and he’s like, ‘I didn’t see anything.'”

Karl Urban, who plays Butcher, added, “I stayed away from that set. I didn’t feel like that was something I needed to see. After working on the show for two seasons going into a third season, you come to build up a certain desensitization to some of the more graphic content.”
