Creator Cian O’Clery described how they made the show on Netflix to Tudum. He mentioned that he met a lot of people who had autism while he was working with Love on the Spectrum co-executive producer Karina Holden. “Not only did we get to know the people we were filming really well, but we also spoke to hundreds and hundreds of people on the spectrum about their lives and what was important to them. The story of people wanting to find love and wanting to date just kept coming up. To us, that was something that wasn’t right. There was obviously a lack of support, and it just felt like a really interesting area to shine a light on.”
He continued, “The other thing that we noticed was the diversity of the spectrum and just how different people can be. That’s the most important thing that we can do with this series, to show that huge diversity that people don’t really understand. I should note, as well, it’s really important to acknowledge that not everybody who is on the spectrum needs support in the world of dating and relationships. Everyone’s so different. But a lot of people do, and a lot of people we spoke to did and were really calling out for that.”
Abbey is introduced in the first season of Love On The Spectrum US where we see her relationship bloom with David, a fellow animal enthusiast. They bonded over their love for animals and traveling in their first date at the zoo. This time around we see them take the next step in Africa where they see their favorite animals. Yes, Abbey and David are still together after Love On The Spectrum US. The two filmed their trip to Africa for the show in 2022, and they recently posted cute pictures of each other and their lives in Los Angeles on their respective social media accounts as of December 2023.
Abbey runs her own hat company and has gained a mass following on social media. Proceeds from her hats go to the Autism Society of America. The logo for Abbey’s company features a mermaid, which derived from her favorite Disney character Ariel from The Little Mermaid. She and her mom also post frequently on her TikTok account where she has over a million followers.
In a dinner date, both Abbey and David posted a joint Instagram post where the caption showed how much they care for each other. Abbey was struggling with a crying baby at a restaurant at the next table. Every time the baby screamed David covered Abbey’s ears to help her deal with the painful nature of that sound.
