On January 18, the BAFTAs revealed its 2024 nominations (check out the entire list of nominees below), with Oppenheimer and Poor Things leading this year’s nods. “The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today span an extraordinary range of genres and stories,” said BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “The field this year is incredibly strong. More films were entered, making the selection process particularly tough for our voting members. The films and talented people nominated represent some of the most talked about films of the year, the most critically acclaimed, and films yet to be released and discovered by audiences.”

Who is hosting the 2024 BAFTA Awards?

Who is hosting the 2024 BAFTA Awards? The 77th British Academy Film Awards will be hosted by David Tennant, marking the Scottish actor’s first time hosting the prestigious ceremony. Tennant is best known for starring as the Tenth Doctor in the British sci-fi series Doctor Who for three series, nine specials, and other Doctor Who spin-offs.

“I am delighted to have been asked to host the EE Bafta Film Awards and help celebrate the very best of this year’s films and the many brilliant people who bring them to life,” the actor told the BBC in January 2024.

Ahead of the ceremony, Variety asked Tennant whether he was excited to take on the role of host. “I am! But I’m a bit bewildered. I don’t know what to expect, if I’m honest with you,” he admitted. “The whole thing just feels like one of those experiences you say “yes” to because it would be churlish not to. But what an amazing thing to be asked to do. What a privilege.”

As for his hosting style, the Doctor Who star said he has good material that “won’t leave anyone feeling got at.” Tennant went on, “I think the BAFTA mood is supportive and friendly. Ricky Gervais is brilliant at what he does, but that wouldn’t be my style. I don’t think I’ve quite got that sort of approach, so I think you just have to kind of be who you are, really. But we’ve got some good material that won’t leave anyone feeling got at.”

Last year, the BAFTAs were hosted by Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond.

Who are the 2024 BAFTA nominees? Oppenheimer leads the BAFTA nominations this year with a whopping 13 nominations, followed by Poor Things with 11 and Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest with nine. Films like Barbie, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Maestro are also contenders for the night’s biggest awards.

As for major snubs, Martin Scorsese and Greta Gerwig were left off the Best Director nominations, while Killers of the Flower Moon Lily Gladstone also missed out on nods despite already winning awards for her stellar performance in Scorsese’s film. Yorgos Lanthimos is also not in the running for the director category despite his film Poor Things receiving 11 nods this year.
