What is Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge about?

Along with covering von Furstenberg’s career in the fashion industry, her documentary also explores her family’s background, including her mother, Liliane Halfin, an Auschwitz survivor and a prisoner at at Poland concentration camp 18 months before von Furstenberg’s birth. In an interview with USA Today, von Furstenberg revealed that a doctor warned her mother that delivering a baby would endanger both her and her child’s life.

“My mother was not supposed to survive,” von Furstenberg said. “She was 21 years old. She was 49 pounds, but she did survive. And she used to say, ‘God saved me so that I can give you life. By giving you life, you gave me my life back. You are my torch of freedom.'”

von Furstenberg also thanked her mother for making her the woman she is today. “I thank her for pushing me,” von Furstenberg said. “She never told me, be careful. She always said, be responsible. She made me responsible for myself, which was the biggest gift.”
