Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck starred together in the 2003 flop superhero movie, Daredevil (Garner played Matt Murdoch’s love interest, the assassin-for-hire, Elektra). They went public as a couple a year later, married in 2005, and eventually divorced in 2018. Now, as she makes her cameo appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, she’s throwing subtle shade at her ex.

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine.

After Deadpool and Wolverine are cast into The Void by the TVA, they discover “the others;” a collective of “forgotten” MCU stars, alongside Wesley Snipes’ Blade and the Gambit that never was in Channing Tatum (he wasn’t available for that character’s film introduction in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. The role went to Taylor Kitsch, but it wasn’t well-received.)

They’re in hiding because someone “always dies” when they try to take on Cassandra Nova, noting that Quicksilver, Hawkeye, and Daredevil are among her victims. “I’m so sorry,” Deadpool says, offering his condolences. “Don’t be,” Elektra shrugs, seemingly unaffected.

Garner is just one of many delightful surprise cameos in the new Deadpool film, and her short line of dialogue is not the only shade thrown at other celebrities, either. In the opening fight scene with Deadpool fighting TVA agents, one makes a slight towards Ryan Reynolds‘ native Canada, to which he replies: “Get my country’s name out of your f—cking mouth!” as a reference to the viral Slap at the 2022 Oscars, when Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
