10 TV Shows Debuting This Spring Worth Setting Your DVR For Now
Though the spring television schedule isn’t as packed as it is during the fall, there’s quite a bit to look forward to this year. From Shonda Rhimes‘ juicy new drama “The Catch” to Starz’ buzzy call-girl themed series “The Girlfriend Experience,” here are 10 TV shows debuting this season that you probably should set your DVR for now.
“The Family”
Network: ABC
Air date: March 3, 9 p.m.
The premise sounds addictive—a multilayered show about the personal and political fallout that comes with the appearance of a child a decade after he vanished and a man confessed to his murder—and the cast excellent (Joan Allen, Andrew McCarthy, Rupert Graves and Alison Pill) although advance reviews have pointed out that the intense subject matter may have better suited to cable than a prime-time network.
“Of Kings and Prophets”
Network: ABC
Air date: March 8, 10 p.m.
Get ready for a Biblical drama based on the Book of Samuel that follows an ensemble of characters including Saul and David, the successive Kings of Israel, their families, and their political rivals. Expect plenty of sex and violence, too!
“Flaked”
Network: Netflix
Air date: March 11
Will Arnett returns to TV with this comedy set in Venice, Calif., about a lying self-appointed guru trying to keep his life together.
“Party Over Here”
Network: FOX
Air date: March 12, 11 p.m.
A half-hour sketch comedy series executive-produced by The Lonely Island—aka Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone—that will cover everything from pop culture to politics. The series stars Nicole Byer, Jessica McKenna, and Alison Rich.
“Heartbeat”
Network: NBC
Air date: March 23, 8 p.m.
Another medical drama! This one follows Dr. Alex Panttiere (played by Aussie Melissa George), an outspoken world-renowned heart transplant surgeon and one of the few women in her field trying to balance work and a “racy” personal life. Also stars Dave Annable, D.L. Hughley, and Jamie Kennedy.
“The Catch”

Air date: March 24
“Parenthood” star Peter Krause and Mireille Enos—best known for playing Detective Sarah Linden on AMC’s “The Killing”—will star in this new Shonda Rhimes show, which follows Alice Martin (Enos), a fraud investigator finds out her fiancé is a con man.
“The Ranch”
Network: Netflix
Air date: April 1
That ’70s Show stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson reunite in this comedy set in Colorado about a failed semi-pro football player (Kutcher) coming home to the family ranch.
“The Girlfriend Experience”
Network: Starz
Air date: April 10, 8 p.m.
Starz has been doing some excellent work—”Flesh & Bone,” and “Power” among its two standouts—so we’re looking forward to this Steven Soderberg-crated series based on his 2009 movie about a call girl who offers the “girlfriend experience” to clients. Starring It-girl Riley Keough.
“The Night Manager”
Network: AMC
Air date: April 19, 10 p.m.
A pretty stellar (and very British) cast including Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston, and Olivia Colman lead this dramatic miniseries based on John le Carré’s beloved spy novel.
“Containment”
Network: The CW
Air date: April 19
A buzzy horror series about a deadly epidemic in Atlanta that forces authorities to quarantine the city that people stuck inside.
