SZA was seen where many celebrities are seen: outside the studio lot where they shoot Jimmy Kimmel Live, and she was wearing An Outfit. She wore a Lions jersey over a plaid shirt over a striped shirt over a khaki shirt. She had on a tartan baker boy hat, a pair of mid-calf length jean shorts (jorts), and a pair of black boot sandals things that I really cannot wrap my head around. Oh and also big ass necklaces down to her torso. The Keds she must have been wearing earlier are in tow, don’t worry.

Now not to be confused with denim shorts, which are regular shorts made of denim. Jorts offer an option that is more imposing, more challenging to the audience. It has this weird, unconventional vibe that implies an unkempt, uninterested appearance, but that’s the bit. Like you can’t say the jorts that SZA is wearing are anything similar to a traditional denim short.
When Y2K aesthetics became popular, there was this this widely-circulated image alongside a point made by a fashion critic online (and I wish I could remember which one, but the Internet has turned my mind into mush, and I only remember the point and not the source.) The image is of Paris Hilton in a pink velour tracksuit and a man filming her wearing an oversized t-shirt and a pair of baggy pants. The point was to prove that while the image of Paris Hilton is what we remember as aesthetic of the era, what it actually is is a pastiche of the era. In reality, what normal people wore during that time more closely resembles the camera man. Things like jorts don’t just come out of nowhere. They have been a commonly worn thing before, although not necessarily thought of as fashionable. When things come back, they often call back to things that may have been overlooked the first time.
