I love when an outfit you put a lot of effort into looks effortless. That’s exactly what I thought when I saw photos of Michelle Williams arriving at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on April 1. She looked cool and sexy but in a fuss-free, “I didn’t try too hard” way—and honestly, that’s always the goal.
Williams, who has been promoting her new FX show Dying for Sex, made a strong case for wearing pajamas in public. She stepped out in a babydoll nightgown paired with thigh-high scrunch boots. Her dainty black frock featured white lace throughout and a breezy, flowy skirt. She accessorized with a gold tassel necklace, a burgundy chain-strap handbag, and black sunnies. On her feet were ultra-chic leather boots that reminded us of the Saint Laurent pair Pedro Pascal wore to Last of Us season 2 premiere last week—except hers had a heel. The point is, the silhouette is—and will always be—a wardrobe staple and statement.

If you’re taking notes, Williams’ outfit is the perfect example of a style formula that never fails: a dress and boots. It’s flattering, easy to recreate, and ideal for transitional weather. If it’s still a little chilly outside, the boots keep your toes covered while the dress lets you show some skin. Her choice of a babydoll silhouette also feels incredibly timely. The spring/summer 2025 runways of Chloé, Kate Barton, and Aknvas were packed with slips and vintage-leaning frocks trimmed with lace and frills.
