Among the biggest team ups between high fashion designers and American mall brands is the appointment of Zac Posen at Gap. Posen’s tenure at Gap really begins with his new initiative, a premium line called GapStudio, which promises a luxury (or maybe at least premium) product to the standard Gap line that we’re used to. And it’s something celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski are taking interest in.
This comes just in time as people notice vintage pieces from mall brands like J.Crew and Gap tend to be higher quality than some of the pieces in contemporary collections. It seems the designer appointments, not just by Gap, but also by Uniqlo (Claire Waight Keller) and and J.Crew (Olympia Gayot), are attempting to return to that original form. With GapStudio specifically, we’ve seen celebrities like Demi Moore and Anne Hathaway wear pieces from the collection to red carpets, and Da’vine Joy Randolph even wearing GapStudio to the Met Gala as Zac Posen’s guest. Just the other day, Emily Ratajkowski was seen in New York City wearing the cropped coated denim jacket. The entire strategy here seems to be something that will elevate the American mall brands to the level of Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren. This is a move we’ve seen in Europe to an extremely elevated degree, with the example of Loewe’s conversion of from heritage brand to high fashion luxury coming to mind.


Just last December, Vogue published a cover story called “How Fashion Is Coming Down To Earth,” the shoot featuring models wearing brands from Bode to GapStudio. The message is clear, from designers, brands, fashion media, and celebrities alike: America’s mall brands are next up.
The collection itself is 53 pieces with a color story that focuses on blue denim, black, cream, and pops of vermillion, so a true classic American fashion color palette. And the prices range from $78 all the way up to $248. This being the debut collection, I imagine it’s a starting lineup of staples, with more creative or expressive pieces coming down in future.
