Hailey Bieber just stepped out in a tiny pair of micro shorts, and it’s causing fans to theorize about the economy. As strange as it sounds, the “hemline index” is the theory that the popularity of a shorter hemline means the economy is improving. I’m no economist, but what I do know is that micro shorts are everywhere right now. At Coachella, micro shorts were worn by some of the festival’s biggest performers including Megan Thee Stallion, Charli xcx, and Jennie—and it’s safe to say they aren’t going anywhere.

As much as the internet loves a far-fetched theory, the hemline index might make more sense than we think. At its core, the theory really just shows the correlation between our fashion choices and the status quo. Times are tough, and for fashion lovers, there’s no better way to cope than by putting on a cute outfit and strutting your stuff. Although experts are hesitant to believe that our obsession with short hemlines has anything to do with the state of the economy, I can acknowledge that micro shorts are super hot and empowering in our turbulent times—if nothing else.

Just like tons of other celebrities, Hailey Bieber is making a case for barely-there micro shorts. Yesterday, she was seen in LA wearing a baseball cap, a leather bomber, loafers, and a pair of sporty black micro shorts. Although the Coachella ‘fits were of course way more flashy, Hailey’s look is proving that micro shorts can be just as chic dressed down. So even if you’re not attending Coachella weekend two or strolling around LA like Hailey Bieber, there’s no denying that micro shorts are the it piece for spring and summer.

If you don’t own a pair of micro shorts, you’re already way behind. Whether you opt for a sporty number like Hailey, or a more dressed-up version for a night out—you can never go wrong with a cute pair of tiny shorts. Thankfully, there are tons of options at different price points, so you can look your best even when the world is going up in flames.
